Verdict

Good choice, check first

Small urban SUV with 90 then 83 hp, well ranked for reliability in British surveys (Autocar: first in its class out of 22). Points to check: the manual gearbox clutch, the recalls (engine stalling on the first batches, fuel tank on some 2020 cars) and active safety: 3 Euro NCAP stars as standard, only 5 with the emergency braking pack.

Known faults

Clutch wear and manual gearbox

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The clutch is the most frequently cited point to watch in Ignis II owner accounts: judder, average progressiveness and sometimes early wear (replacements reported at around 37,000 and 90,000 km). One owner blames the clutch cable retaining bracket; crunching from the manual gearbox is also reported. Autocar states that a crunch in first or reverse often comes from a slack cable or a worn bracket. These are isolated accounts, not statistics.

Possible fuel tank vent leak (2020 recall)

Manufacturer recall

On Ignis cars built in 2020, the tank vent pipe may not have been welded properly: if the tank is overfilled, fuel can leak and, near a source of ignition, cause a fire. The remedy is free replacement of the tank. Production dates vary depending on the source (July to October or November 2020): check the VIN at a dealer.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Battery charging and starter-generator belt (2018 recalls)

Manufacturer recall

Two British recalls in March 2018 concern Ignis cars from the first months of production (August 2016 to August 2017): software in the engine ECU could cut off the battery charging, and the starter-generator belt (ISG, cars built from September 2016 to February 2017) could break. In the worst case, the engine stalls and will not restart. The remedies are free (reprogramming, belt replacement). These recalls are documented in the UK: have the VIN checked at a Suzuki France dealer.

Manufacturer recalls

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Clutch: test the biting point on a hill, engagement of first and reverse, and any crunching when changing gear; ask whether it has already been replaced.
  • Have a Suzuki dealer check the VIN to find out which recalls have been carried out (engine software, ISG belt on the first batches, tank on 2020 cars).
  • Check whether the car has the emergency braking pack (Dual Camera Brake Support): it is what raises the Euro NCAP rating from 3 to 5 stars.
  • CVT or automatic gearbox: take a long test drive, cold and under load, to detect jerks and abnormal noises.
  • Check the service book and the oil level (oil consumption is reported on very high-mileage, poorly maintained cars).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the clutch been replaced, and at what mileage? Do you have the invoice?
  • Have the manufacturer's recalls been carried out at Suzuki? Do you have a certificate?
  • Is the car fitted with the safety pack with emergency braking?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
