Verdict

Good choice

Small four-seat city car with a 168 L boot, available with a single engine: the 69 hp 1.0 VVT-i three-cylinder, then 72 hp after the 2018 facelift. Its reliability is considered good, the most frequently cited weak point being the clutch, in both the manual and the x-shift automated manual. Its safety is modest: 3 stars in the Euro NCAP test of 2017 in standard equipment.

Known faults

Premature wear or clutch fault

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The clutch is the part most often cited in owner reviews of the Aygo 2. Carverif reports clutch faults on the 5-speed manual and x-shift automated manual gearboxes built up to 14 March 2017. Some owners report a clutch failing shortly after the 3-year warranty ends or around 65,000 km. Signs to watch for on a test drive: slipping, juddering, difficult or snatching gear changes.

Juddering and failure of the x-shift automated manual gearbox

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The x-shift is a manual gearbox whose clutch and gear changes are controlled by an actuator. Owners report juddering when pulling away, and clutch or actuator faults whose repair is expensive. A manual gearbox is more reassuring.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Clutch test: pull away on a hill and in 3rd gear at low revs; reject the car if it slips, judders or the gears catch.
  • On an x-shift: a long test drive in town with stops, starts and reversing; there should be no jerking and no fault message.
  • For a car built before 14 March 2017: ask whether the clutch has already been replaced, with invoices to back it up.
  • Check the engine oil level, as Carverif recommends monitoring oil consumption.
  • For an Aygo built between late August and early October 2020: have Toyota check the rear seat belt recall using the serial number.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the clutch (or the x-shift gearbox actuator) already been replaced? At what mileage?
  • Do you have the maintenance invoices, including the oil changes?
  • Was the car driven mainly in town?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Frequently asked questions

What Euro NCAP rating does the Toyota Aygo 2 have?

Tested at the end of 2017, it scores 3 stars in standard equipment (74% for adults, 63% for children, 64% for pedestrians, 25% for safety assist) and 4 stars with the optional Toyota Safety Sense safety pack, which was not offered on every trim level. It had scored 4 stars in the 2014 test.

Which engine should I choose for a used Aygo 2?

There is only one engine, the 1.0 VVT-i: 69 hp until the 2018 facelift, then 72 hp. The real question concerns the gearbox: the 5-speed manual is more reassuring than the x-shift automated manual, which is slower and more often cited for clutch and actuator problems.

What is the boot capacity of the Aygo 2?

168 litres, one of the smallest on the market, for 4 seats.
