Verdict
Compact with a 420 L boot (610 L in the SW estate), rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2013. The 1.2 PureTech (wet belt, oil consumption) and the 1.5 BlueHDi (timing chain, recall) have documented serious faults, and all BlueHDi engines are exposed to AdBlue tank failure: service history, recalls and engine condition must be checked before buying.

Known faults
Degraded “wet” timing belt (1.2 PureTech)
Severity 3/3 · SeriousOn the 1.2 PureTech turbo, the timing belt runs in oil and can disintegrate. Its debris clogs the oil pump strainer, causing oil pressure to drop, which can destroy the engine; it can also block the vacuum pump and reduce braking assistance. A recall launched in January 2021 (220,000 vehicles built from 2013 to 2017, including the 308) targeted this loss of braking assistance, not the belt itself. Stellantis extended the belt warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, subject to servicing conditions. CarVerif considers the 2014 to 2016 308s the most exposed.

Premature wear of the timing chain (1.5 BlueHDi)
Severity 3/3 · SeriousOn the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5), the 7 mm camshaft chain can wear prematurely because of oil carbonisation; the first sign is a rattle on cold start. A break causes the engine to stop suddenly. Engines built from 2017 to early 2023, including those in the 308 II, are subject to a recall (inspection, software update and, if needed, a reinforced 8 mm chain) and a warranty extended to 10 years or 240,000 km.

Oil consumption (1.2 PureTech)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyThe 1.2 PureTech can consume a lot of oil, up to engine failure if the level is not monitored. Stellantis (Citroën UK) attributes this fault to piston ring segmentation on engines built from April 2014 to July 2018, then to the oil separator on those built from February 2018 to February 2023; it is covered by the warranty extension subject to servicing conditions. Owners of 308 II PureTech 130s report about 1 litre per 1,000 km beyond 140,000 to 170,000 km.

Faulty AdBlue tank (BlueHDi diesels)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyOn BlueHDi 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 diesels built up to the end of 2022, the AdBlue tank (with integrated pump, sensor or control unit) can fail: a warning message announces that the car will not start after a certain mileage, and the complete tank must be replaced. UFC-Que Choisir referred the matter to the DGCCRF in 2023 after more than 5,000 testimonies; Peugeot partly covers the fault, on a case-by-case basis.

Squeaking rear crossmember
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingA recurring fault on the 308 II according to L'argus: the rear crossmember squeaks, which is more irritating than dangerous. A technical note from early 2017 extended the problem to a second crossmember part number. Owners report replacing the crossmember, sometimes more than once.

Manufacturer recalls

Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €84 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €117 |
| Maintenance | €33 |
| Depreciation | €100 |
| Total per month | €334 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (diesel)€84
BlueHDi 120 (1.6) version: combined consumption of 3.1 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
3.1 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €84
Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.
- Insurance€117
Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.
- Maintenance€33
Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.
- Depreciation€100
Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.
Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Insist on service invoices: oil changes at the correct interval with the recommended oil, and belt checks (PureTech).
- Check the oil level when cold and ask whether topping up is needed between oil changes.
- Ask a Peugeot dealer, using the serial number, which recalls have been carried out and whether the car is eligible for warranty extensions.
- 1.5 BlueHDi diesel: listen to the cold start; a rattle can indicate a slack chain.
- Diesel: check there is no AdBlue or emissions message and ask whether the AdBlue tank has been replaced.
- Listen to the rear on a rough road: a squeak can come from the rear crossmember.
- Have the rear seatbelt anchorage recall checked (308s built from 12 October 2015, up to 2019 according to the sources).
Questions to ask the seller
- Do you have all the service invoices, with the oil references used?
- Has the timing belt (or the chain on the 1.5 diesel) been checked or replaced?
- Does the car use oil between oil changes?
- Has the AdBlue tank already been replaced (diesel)?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
