Our conclusion
The Golf VII is more reassuring: reliability score of 3/5, with costly but non-dangerous faults (DQ200 DSG7 gearbox, water pump, 1.6 TDI turbocharger), against 1.5/5 for the 308 II, whose 1.2 PureTech (timing belt, oil consumption) and 1.5 BlueHDi (timing chain) engines have serious faults. Both have 5 Euro NCAP stars (2012 for the Golf, 2013 for the 308). The 308 has the larger boot (420 L against 380 L). On the 308 II, the 1.6 BlueHDi 120 and 2.0 BlueHDi 150 diesels avoid the documented timing faults.
