5 known faults

PureTech 110

  1. Degraded “wet” timing belt (1.2 PureTech)

    Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.2 PureTech turbo, the timing belt runs in oil and can disintegrate. Its debris clogs the oil pump strainer, causing oil pressure to drop, which can destroy the engine; it can also block the vacuum pump and reduce braking assistance. A recall launched in January 2021 (220,000 vehicles built from 2013 to 2017, including the 308) targeted this loss of braking assistance, not the belt itself. Stellantis extended the belt warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, subject to servicing conditions. CarVerif considers the 2014 to 2016 308s the most exposed.

  2. Oil consumption (1.2 PureTech)

    Severity 2/3 · Costly

The 1.2 PureTech can consume a lot of oil, up to engine failure if the level is not monitored. Stellantis (Citroën UK) attributes this fault to piston ring segmentation on engines built from April 2014 to July 2018, then to the oil separator on those built from February 2018 to February 2023; it is covered by the warranty extension subject to servicing conditions. Owners of 308 II PureTech 130s report about 1 litre per 1,000 km beyond 140,000 to 170,000 km.

  3. Squeaking rear crossmember

    Severity 1/3 · Annoying

A recurring fault on the 308 II according to L'argus: the rear crossmember squeaks, which is more irritating than dangerous. A technical note from early 2017 extended the problem to a second crossmember part number. Owners report replacing the crossmember, sometimes more than once.

BlueHDi 100 (1.5)

  1. Premature wear of the timing chain (1.5 BlueHDi)

    Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5), the 7 mm camshaft chain can wear prematurely because of oil carbonisation; the first sign is a rattle on cold start. A break causes the engine to stop suddenly. Engines built from 2017 to early 2023, including those in the 308 II, are subject to a recall (inspection, software update and, if needed, a reinforced 8 mm chain) and a warranty extended to 10 years or 240,000 km.

  2. Faulty AdBlue tank (BlueHDi diesels)

    Severity 2/3 · Costly

On BlueHDi 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 diesels built up to the end of 2022, the AdBlue tank (with integrated pump, sensor or control unit) can fail: a warning message announces that the car will not start after a certain mileage, and the complete tank must be replaced. UFC-Que Choisir referred the matter to the DGCCRF in 2023 after more than 5,000 testimonies; Peugeot partly covers the fault, on a case-by-case basis.
