Verdict
A four-cylinder diesel of 1,560 cm³ developed with Ford, with a timing belt, launched in 2004 as the HDi and then offered as the BlueHDi until it was replaced by the 1.5 BlueHDi from 2017. Points to watch: turbos that fail through lack of lubrication on the first 16-valve 1.6 HDi (2004-2008), fragile injectors and, on the BlueHDi, an AdBlue tank prone to faults. Insist on a consistent service history with regular oil changes.

Turbo starved of lubrication by carbon deposits (1.6 HDi)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyOn the 1.6 HDi, a leaking injector seal washer produces carbon deposits that end up in the oil: the oil pressure drops, the oil strainer and the turbo's oil supply can clog, and the turbo bearing is destroyed. L'argus cites turbo seizure on the 16-valve 1.6 HDi from 2004 to July 2008. Replacing the turbo without cleaning the circuit (strainer, oil supply pipes) risks a new failure. The 8-valve 1.6 HDi (DV6C) that came later is reportedly less affected, according to owners. Prevention: frequent oil changes with the recommended oil and monitoring for injector leaks.

Faulty diesel injectors
Severity 2/3 · CostlyThe injection system is the recurring weak point of the 1.6 HDi/BlueHDi: injector seals that leak or injectors that seize. L'argus reports failures of Continental-made injectors on the 8-valve 1.6 HDi introduced in 2009, and owners of 308 1.6 BlueHDi report injector replacements.

Faulty AdBlue tank (1.6 BlueHDi)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyOn the 1.6 BlueHDi, the AdBlue system can fail (tank, AdBlue injector or level sensor): a warning announces that the engine will not start after a certain mileage, and the tank must be replaced. UFC-Que Choisir notes that the 1.6 BlueHDi appears more sensitive than other engines; BlueHDi diesels built up to the end of 2022 are affected, and the association referred the matter to the DGCCRF in 2023.

Read fault codes
An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
