Verdict

Buy with care

Large five- or seven-seat SUV rated 5 Euro NCAP stars in 2020 (82% adult protection), sold in France as a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. A recall concerned the eCall emergency call system of the first vehicles (built in 2020). We found no detailed reliability review of this generation for the French market: have the recalls checked using the serial number.

Known faults

Recall: eCall emergency call (first vehicles)

Manufacturer recall

A recall concerned Sorento IVs built at the end of 2020: if an airbag deploys, the eCall emergency call does not transmit the vehicle identification number (VIN) to the emergency services, which can delay assistance. In the United Kingdom, 965 vehicles built between 1 September and 14 December 2020 are affected; a European alert gives a different period and number (5,738 vehicles). The fix is a system reset by a Kia dealer, taking about 30 minutes and free of charge. Kia is not aware of any injury or accident linked to this fault. The sources do not specify the share of vehicles sold in France: check the serial number.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€172
Insurance€62
Maintenance€35
Depreciation€360
Total per month€629

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Consumption taken from a published range (depends on trim and tyres).
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Maintenance: budget of a closely related model.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€172

1.6 T-GDi HEV 230 version: combined consumption of 7 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

7 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €172

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Give the serial number to a Kia dealer to check the recalls, in particular the eCall emergency call recall on cars built in 2020.
  • Plug-in hybrid: ask for the service invoices and check on the test drive that charging and electric mode work.
  • Carry out an extended test drive to detect jerking when switching between electric and petrol power.
  • Seven-seat cars: check the folding and locking of the third-row seats.
  • Check the service book and the remaining manufacturer warranty.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the eCall recall been carried out at Kia? Do you have proof?
  • For the plug-in hybrid: was the car charged regularly?
  • What are the dates and details of the servicing carried out?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
