Verdict

Good choice, check first

Well-protected family SUV (5 Euro NCAP stars in 2021) with a generous boot (616 litres in the hybrid). The 1.6 CRDi 48V diesel accounts for the most serious warnings: several sites report engine failure linked to the starter-generator pulley. The petrol and hybrid versions seem safer, although electronic problems are reported.

Known faults

Engine failure linked to the starter-generator pulley (1.6 CRDi 48V)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

Several reliability sites report that, on the 136 hp 1.6 CRDi 48V diesel, the starter-generator pulley or tensioner can seize and damage the engine, up to complete failure. Fiches-auto reports testimonies of engines written off on this engine. The sources disagree on how frequent the problem is, and we have found no official confirmation from Hyundai: ask a dealer, using the serial number, whether a recall campaign is open.

Electronic faults and 12 V battery (hybrids)

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

On the hybrid Tucson, Carverif reports electronic malfunctions and Carchecker reports false inverter coolant warnings as well as a 12 V battery that discharges when the car is parked. These faults are an inconvenience and remain to be confirmed, the sources being reliability sites with limited data.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • 1.6 CRDi 48V diesel: ask a Hyundai dealer, using the serial number, which recalls are open or have been carried out, and ask for the service invoices.
  • 1.6 CRDi 48V diesel: listen to the engine on starting and at idle (pulley or belt noises) and check there is no engine warning light.
  • Test the automatic gearbox on the test drive: jerking, neutral changes, hesitation at low speed.
  • Hybrids: check there are no error messages on the dashboard and that the 12 V battery starts without difficulty after a night parked.
  • Check the multimedia screen and the driver assistance systems work.
  • Plug-in hybrid: check the charging cable and the displayed electric range.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have all the service invoices, and have the manufacturer recalls been carried out at Hyundai?
  • Has the engine or gearbox been repaired or replaced, or has a warning light come on?
  • Has the 12 V battery already been replaced, or has it discharged when the car was parked?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
