Braking assistance: vacuum pump (recall)

Manufacturer recall

A recall by the German KBA (reference 14840R) concerns 23,887 Sportages built from 8 September 2022 to 14 June 2023: a failure of the vacuum pump can force the driver to press the brake pedal harder and switch on the engine warning light. The fix is a software update to the engine control unit. The sources do not specify which engines are concerned: have the serial number checked at a Kia dealer.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Give the serial number to a Kia dealer to check recalls, in particular the vacuum pump recall (built September 2022 to June 2023).
  • Check on the test drive the effort needed on the brake pedal and that no engine warning light is on.
  • Test the multimedia screen and the dashboard: start-up, freezes, warning lights.
  • Plug-in hybrid: ask for the service invoices and check that charging and electric mode work.
  • Check the service book and the remaining manufacturer warranty.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the software recall linked to the brake vacuum pump been carried out at Kia? Do you have proof?
  • Have the multimedia screen or the dashboard ever failed?
  • For the plug-in hybrid: was the car charged regularly?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
