Verdict

Good choice, check first

Stretched version of the Tiguan II with a third row of seats: 700 L of boot in five seats, 230 L in seven seats. The documented points to watch are the DSG7 gearbox (oil change, mechatronics), the EGR valve of the 2.0 TDI, and a recall for rear spring breakage on 2017-2019 cars. Have the gearbox history and the recall checked before buying.

Known faults

DSG7 gearbox: delayed shifts and mechatronics

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On the 150 hp 2.0 TDI of the Allspace, CarVerif notes delayed gear changes, mainly in town and before 2019, and stresses changing the gearbox oil every 60,000 km. Specialist workshops describe mechatronics failures of the DQ381 gearbox fitted to Tiguans: loss of gears, degraded mode, then loss of all gears.

EGR valve on the 2.0 TDI

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The EGR valve is the recurring fault of the 2.0 TDI according to CarVerif: degraded mode, loss of power and an engine warning light. The Autocopilot buyer's guide considers it fragile (plastic body) and recommends checking the EGR invoices. CarVerif quotes 280 to 1,400 € for a cleaning or a replacement.

Rear suspension springs breaking (recall)

Manufacturer recall

A recall concerns the 2017-2019 Tiguan Allspace: a non-approved material was used for the rear springs during a limited production period, and a spring can break and damage the tyre. The recall provides for both rear axle springs to be replaced at a dealer.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Insurance: average for a closely related model (other generation or same platform).
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€138

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • DSG7 gearbox: test when cold and hot, with manoeuvres and reverse, to detect delayed shifts, jerking or degraded mode.
  • Ask for the DSG gearbox oil change invoices (every 60,000 km according to CarVerif) and have the fault codes read.
  • 2.0 TDI: check the EGR valve invoices and that there is no engine warning light or degraded mode during the test drive.
  • 2017-2019 example: have a dealer check, using the VIN, that the rear spring recall has been carried out.
  • Third row: actually try it; L'argus describes it as occasional seats (5+2) and the boot drops to 230 L.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the DSG gearbox oil been changed? When, and at what mileage? Do you have the invoices?
  • Has the EGR valve been cleaned or replaced, and has the engine warning light ever come on?
  • Has the rear spring recall been carried out?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
