Verdict

Buy with care

Large SUV with a generous 625-litre boot, rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2018, although that rating has since expired. What Car? reports no major weak point on this generation, but we found only limited detailed feedback on its reliability. Buy after checking the recall history (curtain airbags) and the servicing.

Known faults

Curtain airbag recall (fixing bolts)

Manufacturer recall

Following Euro NCAP tests at the end of 2018, a curtain airbag could tear on a fixing bolt and catch on a seatbelt anchor; Hyundai changed production and launched a recall. In the United States, recall 18V-715 concerned Santa Fes built from May to August 2018: sharp-edged bolts could damage the airbag, repaired by fitting a protective cover. These sources do not specify the vehicles sold in France: have a Hyundai dealer check, using the serial number, whether the recall has been carried out.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€159
Insurance€66
Maintenance€22
Depreciation€317
Total per month€564

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Maintenance: servicing prices only, without tyres or brakes: probably underestimated.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€159

2.2 CRDi 200 version: combined consumption of 5.9 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

5.9 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €159

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€66

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Maintenance€22

Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.

Depreciation€317

Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask a Hyundai dealer, using the serial number, whether the curtain airbag recall has been carried out.
  • Ask for the service book and invoices; have a pre-purchase inspection done on high-mileage versions.
  • Test the automatic gearbox on the test drive: gear changes, jerking, hesitation.
  • Test the air conditioning, the multimedia screen and the emergency call system (a software update was reported by What Car?).
  • Plug-in hybrid: check the charging cable and the displayed electric range.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the curtain airbag recall been carried out at Hyundai?
  • Do you have all the service invoices?
  • Has the gearbox or engine been repaired, or has a warning light come on?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
