Verdict

Good choice, check first

Very well-protected hybrid SUV (5 Euro NCAP stars in 2019) and ranking very well in What Car? reliability surveys. Its rating is held back by three safety recalls covering specific batches (brake booster pump, front suspension arms, plug-in hybrid software): check that they have been carried out. The 12 V battery can also discharge if the car is driven little.

Known faults

12 V battery discharging

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Owners of 2019 hybrid RAV4s report a 12 V auxiliary battery found flat, sometimes after only a few weeks without driving; it is only recharged when the car is in "Ready" mode. Some have been replaced under warranty, and a heavily discharged battery can prevent the boot from opening (Toyota Owners Club). What Car? cites the battery among the few complaints from owners.

Defective brake booster pump (recall)

Manufacturer recall

On hybrid RAV4s built in spring 2019 (26 April to 31 May 2019 according to the Australian recall), badly formed brushes can block the brake booster pump motor: brake assistance and stability control can then be lost, with warning lights coming on. Toyota replaces the pump free of charge (CarAdvice, Green Car Reports, What Car?).

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Cracked front suspension arms (recall)

Manufacturer recall

On RAV4s built between 25 September and 26 October 2019, the lower front suspension arms can crack, then break and separate from the wheel, with a risk of loss of control. The steel came from a batch supplied by Nippon Steel. Toyota replaces both arms free of charge (Car-recalls.eu, Auto123, What Car?).

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Plug-in hybrid shutting down in cold weather (recall)

Manufacturer recall

On plug-in hybrid RAV4s built between late November 2019 and June 2021, strong acceleration after a long drive in electric mode in cold weather can cause the battery voltage to drop: the hybrid system shuts down and the car loses drive. Toyota updates the hybrid control computer's software at the workshop (Car-recalls.eu, Vi Bilägare, ÖAMTC, Jalopnik).

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Toyota RAV4”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have Toyota check, using the serial number, that the recalls have been carried out: brake booster pump (spring 2019), front suspension arms (autumn 2019) and hybrid software (plug-in hybrid 2019-2021).
  • Have the 12 V battery tested and check that the car switches to "Ready" mode without hesitation, especially if it has been driven little.
  • Check that no brake, stability control or hybrid system warning light stays on.
  • On the plug-in hybrid: carry out a full charge to check the socket and the charger.
  • Check the service book and require the complete history.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the recalls (braking, front suspension, hybrid software) been carried out? Do you have the proof?
  • Has the 12 V battery already been replaced, or has the car already refused to start?
  • Was the servicing carried out in the Toyota network, and was the car driven regularly?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Parts and maintenance

Compare prices of parts for the Toyota RAV4 V (timing, brakes, filters) to estimate the repairs to plan for.

Insure the car

Frequently asked questions

Is the Toyota RAV4 5 reliable?

It ranks very well in What Car? reliability surveys, and its owners report few problems, mainly the battery and the suspension. Three safety recalls have nevertheless targeted specific batches (brake booster pump, front suspension arms, plug-in hybrid software): check that they have been carried out.

What is the boot capacity of the Toyota RAV4 5?

580 litres for the 2.5 hybrid, in 2WD or 4WD, and 520 litres for the plug-in hybrid.

What is the difference between the hybrid RAV4 and the plug-in hybrid RAV4?

The hybrid produces 218 hp in front-wheel drive or 222 hp in AWD-i all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid, which arrived in France in early 2021, reaches 306 hp with four-wheel drive and an 18.1 kWh battery, rechargeable from a socket.
