Verdict

Good choice, check first

Very well-protected SUV (5 Euro NCAP stars in 2013), offered in petrol, diesel and, from 2016, a 197 hp hybrid. Diesels built between 2015 and 2018 were the subject of a European recall for an EGR cooler leak (risk of fire), and owners of the 150 hp 2.2 D-4D report excessive oil consumption. The hybrid or the petrol version avoid these issues.

Known faults

Oil consumption on the 2.2 D-4D 150

Severity 2/3 · Costly

In the reviews published on Fiches-auto for the 2013-2019 RAV4, oil consumption is the most reported fault, which Autolisa's guide also notes for this generation. These are owner accounts, from a small sample, and some owners have had no problems at all.

EGR cooler leak (2015-2018 diesel recall)

Manufacturer recall

Toyota recalled in Europe around 122,000 diesel Auris, Avensis, RAV4 and Verso: the EGR cooler can leak internally and the coolant mixes with soot to form incandescent deposits in the cooler and the intake manifold. This can reduce power, light the engine warning light and, very rarely, melt the manifold, a fire risk that cannot be ruled out. The RAV4s concerned are those built between June 2015 and May 2018 (Toyota code 21SMD-029); sources differ slightly on the production dates.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€177
Insurance€46
Maintenance€38
Depreciation€162
Total per month€423

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€177

Essence 2.0 151 version: combined consumption of 7.2 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

7.2 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €177

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • On a 2015 to 2018 diesel: have Toyota check, using the serial number, that the EGR cooler recall (code 21SMD-029) has been carried out.
  • On the 2.2 D-4D 150: check the oil and coolant levels, and ask for the invoices for injectors or the particulate filter.
  • Ask for the complete service book.
  • Check that no engine warning light or loss of power appears during the test drive.
  • On the hybrid (2016 and later): check that no hybrid system error message is displayed.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the EGR cooler recall been carried out (2015-2018 diesel)? Do you have the proof?
  • Has any work been done on the injectors or the particulate filter?
  • Has the car consumed oil between services?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Parts and maintenance

Compare prices of parts for the Toyota RAV4 IV (timing, brakes, filters) to estimate the repairs to plan for.

Insure the car

Insurance prices vary widely from one model to another: get a quote before signing.
