  1. EGR cooler leak (2015-2018 diesel recall)

    Manufacturer recall

Toyota recalled in Europe around 122,000 diesel Auris, Avensis, RAV4 and Verso: the EGR cooler can leak internally and the coolant mixes with soot to form incandescent deposits in the cooler and the intake manifold. This can reduce power, light the engine warning light and, very rarely, melt the manifold, a fire risk that cannot be ruled out. The RAV4s concerned are those built between June 2015 and May 2018 (Toyota code 21SMD-029); sources differ slightly on the production dates.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

    Severity 2/3 · Costly

In the reviews published on Fiches-auto for the 2013-2019 RAV4, oil consumption is the most reported fault, which Autolisa's guide also notes for this generation. These are owner accounts, from a small sample, and some owners have had no problems at all.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
