Buy with care

2.5 hybrid saloon with 218 hp and a 524 L boot, sold in France in hybrid form only. No major problem is expected from the hybrid system (Carbuyer), but two safety recalls are documented: brake booster pump and low-pressure fuel pump. Check using the serial number that they have been dealt with.

Known faults

Defective brake booster pump (recall)

Manufacturer recall

A faulty plastic brush holder can stop the brake booster pump motor, leading to a loss of assistance and therefore longer braking distances. The European recall concerns Camrys (AXVH71) built between 26 April and 6 June 2019 (car-recalls.eu). Toyota Australia recalled Camry Hybrids for the same type of pump.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Low-pressure fuel pump (recall)

Manufacturer recall

The low-pressure fuel pump located in the tank can stop working, with a risk of the engine stalling. Toyota Australia recalled Camry Hybrids to replace it; a similar US recall concerns 2018-2019 Camrys. The exact scope in France is not documented: to be checked with Toyota.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have a Toyota dealer check, using the serial number, that the braking and fuel pump recalls have been carried out.
  • Test the brakes when stationary and at low speed: the assistance should be consistent.
  • Check the service history and the invoices.
  • Carry out an extended test drive to detect jerks or noises during the electric/petrol transitions.
  • Check that the trim and the boot capacity (524 L) match the spec sheet.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the safety recalls (braking, fuel pump) been dealt with? Do you have the proof?
  • Has there been any engine stalling or any fault in the brake assistance?
  • Where was it serviced, and how often?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
