Verdict

Good choice, check first

Compact that is very well protected (5 stars Euro NCAP in 2019) with a large boot (600 L saloon, 640 L estate). The faults reported by CarVerif and Bumper are mainly electronic (multimedia screen, DSG gearbox), but two recalls affect safety (eCall, wheel hub): check that they have been carried out by serial number.

Known faults

Multimedia screen bugs

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Bumper places software bugs in the infotainment system at the top of the Octavia IV's faults: frozen screens, slowness, spontaneous restarts. CarVerif recommends checking the electronics (central screen, driver assistance), and an owner cited by Caradisiac reports a screen failure that cut off the driver assistance systems.

Recall of the rear left wheel hub (April 2023)

Manufacturer recall

A faulty rear left wheel hub can affect the suspension and steering. The recall concerns Octavia IV and IV Combi vehicles built from 4 to 18 April 2023 (Škoda code 42N1).

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Faulty eCall recall (Octavias built late 2019 - early 2020)

Manufacturer recall

The eCall emergency call system may not work, due to a lack of audio connection and data transmission with the emergency centre. The recall concerns Octavia IVs built between 21 November 2019 and 11 May 2020 (Škoda code 91AA).

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Škoda Octavia”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Enter the serial number (VIN) at a Škoda dealer or on RappelConso to confirm that the recalls (eCall, wheel hub) have been carried out.
  • Test the central screen at length: restarts, freezing, responsiveness and operation of the driver assistance systems.
  • Test the DSG gearbox at low speed and in manoeuvres: hesitation and jerks.
  • 1.5 TSI: start and drive when cold to detect jerks.
  • Diesel: ask for the maintenance invoices and avoid a car used only on short trips (EGR, FAP, AdBlue).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the manufacturer's recalls (eCall, wheel hub) been carried out? Do you have the proof?
  • Has the central screen already been replaced or updated under warranty?
  • Has the DSG gearbox shown jerks, and what is its maintenance history?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Parts and maintenance

Compare prices of parts for the Škoda Octavia IV (timing, brakes, filters) to estimate the repairs to plan for.

Insure the car

Insurance prices vary widely from one model to another: get a quote before signing.
