Verdict
Compact sold in France in hybrid form only, very well protected (5 Euro NCAP stars in 2019) and considered reliable, with no major mechanical fault documented. The most frequently cited weak point is the 12 V battery, which discharges if the car is driven little; a recall also concerned the tightening of the brake pedal bracket on cars built between 2019 and 2020.

Known faults
12 V battery discharging
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingThe small 12 V auxiliary battery, not the hybrid battery, is the fault most often reported: it runs flat on short trips, after prolonged standing or with accessories permanently connected (WhoCanFixMyCar), and repeated discharges wear it out prematurely. When too weak, it prevents the hybrid system from starting (CarVerif). 12% of owners surveyed by What Car? cite problems with the 12 V battery, bodywork or infotainment. Owners of the Corolla Touring Sports report batteries going flat repeatedly (Toyota Owners Club).

Brake pedal bracket bolt not tightened correctly (recall)
Manufacturer recallOn Corollas and C-HRs built between June 2019 and March 2020, the bolt securing the bracket that connects the brake pedal to the dashboard may not have been tightened to the correct torque. If it loosens, the pedal can move back towards the driver in a crash, and repeated hard braking can deform its mounting point. Toyota recalled the affected vehicles to check and retighten this bolt (CCPC, Tipperary Live); What Car? also mentions this recall.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Have the 12 V battery tested and check that the car switches to "Ready" mode without hesitation, especially if it has been driven little.
- For a car built between June 2019 and March 2020: have Toyota confirm, using the serial number, that the brake pedal bracket recall has been carried out.
- Also check with Toyota for the recalls linked to the eCall emergency call system, which affected some Corollas.
- Check the service book and require the full history.
- On a Touring Sports 2.0: take into account the slightly smaller boot (581 L instead of 598 L).
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the 12 V battery already been replaced, or has the car already refused to start?
- Have the recalls (brake pedal, emergency call) been carried out?
- Was the servicing done in the Toyota network, and was the car driven regularly?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
