Verdict

Good choice

A very well-protected city car (5 Euro NCAP stars in 2019) with no serious fault documented. Owners mainly report problems with the 12 V battery and minor electronics. For the hybrid, choose the 145 hp version, whose management was revised.

Known faults

Noises, jerks or cut-outs from the hybrid transmission (early 140 hp)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On early Clio E-Tech 140 hp cars, owners report noises, jerks and cut-outs, dealt with depending on the case by replacing the ECU or the gearbox. L'argus mentions the replacement of the hybrid gearbox to eliminate a noise. The 145 hp version, with revised management, is described as smoother.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the 12 V battery tested: about 12.7 V at rest, with the engine off for a few hours.
  • Ask whether the ECU update has been done if the battery has already been found drained.
  • On an E-Tech 140 hp: a 20-minute test drive in town and on an expressway, listening for transmission noises and jerks.
  • Test the automatic wipers, Bluetooth, reversing camera and multimedia screen.
  • Check with a Renault dealer, using the vehicle identification number, that recalls and updates have been carried out.
  • Check the service book and invoices.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the battery already been replaced, or has the car ever failed to start?
  • Have software updates been done at Renault? Do you have the repair orders?
  • For a hybrid: has the gearbox or the hybrid ECU been replaced under warranty?
  • Has the car been serviced within the Renault network?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
