Our conclusion
The Clio V wins on reliability and safety: no serious fault is documented in our sources (rating 4/5, against 2/5 for the 208), and it earned 5 stars at Euro NCAP in 2019, against 4 for the 208 the same year. Its boot is also much bigger (391 L against 265 L). The 208 II remains a possible choice, but its two combustion engines have recognised serious faults (timing belt and oil consumption on the 1.2 PureTech, timing chain on the 1.5 BlueHDi): only buy one with a complete, invoiced service history. On the hybrid Clio, go for the 145 hp version.
