Buy with care

Large 7-seat SUV tested at 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2017, sold in France with three diesels (Td4 180, Sd4 240, Td6 258) and a V6 petrol. Carbuyer describes uneven reliability ("Russian roulette"), with electronic and air suspension problems, and engine failures are reported on the diesels: a complete service history is essential.

Known faults

Engine failure on diesels

Severity 3/3 · Serious

Fiches-auto identifies engine failure as the fault most reported by Sd4 owners (7 reviews, low volume). Carbuyer cites metal particles in the Sd4's oil, possibly due to faulty piston rings, and a few cases of catastrophic engine failure on the diesel V6. An LR Direct technical guide also lists the Discovery 5 among models affected by premature failures of the 2.0 Ingenium diesel. Few vehicles are reported to be affected.

Faulty air suspension

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Carbuyer says the air suspension pump can fail with age, causing the car to lean to one side; it advises lowering and then raising the car to check that it stays level. On a forum, owners report air loss from the dryer or a fitting rather than the compressor: the leak must be located before replacing an expensive part.

Electronic and infotainment bugs

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Carbuyer cites the touchscreen infotainment system as the most frequent complaint from first owners (slowness, freezing) and mentions electrical faults that are hard to diagnose. A 2018 manufacturer technical bulletin (TrueDelta database, North American market) concerns update problems with the InControl Touch Pro system.

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€173
Insurance€70
Maintenance€38
Depreciation€187
Total per month€468

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€173

Sd4 240 version: combined consumption of 6.4 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

6.4 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €173

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€70

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Depreciation€187

Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Require the complete service book and invoices (regular oil changes), especially on diesels where engine failures are reported.
  • Have the engine oil checked by a Land Rover specialist (metal particles reported on the Sd4).
  • Test the air suspension: lower then raise the car, check that it stays level and that no warning light appears.
  • Test the touchscreen infotainment (slowness, freezing) and have the vehicle run an electronic diagnostic.
  • Check with the serial number at a Land Rover dealership that the recalls and updates have been carried out.
  • Check the windscreen seal (water leaks reported) and the proper operation of the electric parking brake.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the vehicle been serviced within the Land Rover network? Do you have all the invoices?
  • Has the engine or the air suspension already been repaired or replaced?
  • Have the recalls and infotainment system updates been carried out?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Parts and maintenance

Compare prices of parts for the Land Rover Discovery V (timing, brakes, filters) to estimate the repairs to plan for.

Insure the car

Frequently asked questions

Is the Land Rover Discovery 5 reliable?

Carbuyer describes uneven reliability ("Russian roulette"): some owners have no problems at all, while others spend a lot of time in the workshop. It cites electrical faults, the air suspension and a few engine failures on the diesels.

What Euro NCAP rating did the Discovery 5 get?

5 stars, tested in January 2017: 90% for adult protection, 80% for child, 75% for pedestrians and 73% for driver assistance (Practical Motoring). The body did note, however, that the driver's airbag bottomed out in the frontal impact and that the driver's door unlatched in the side impact.

What is the boot capacity of the Discovery 5?

About 817 litres in 7-seat configuration with the third row folded, and up to 2,500 litres at most; fiches-auto gives 258 litres with all three rows raised.
