Verdict

Buy with care

Compact crossover derived from the Ceed, sold with petrol, 1.6 CRDi diesel and plug-in hybrid engines. Two recalls need checking using the serial number: the tandem pump (2018-2020 builds, braking) and the fire risk linked to the clutch actuator of the plug-in hybrid (2019-2023). CarVerif rates the 1.6 CRDi 136 at 6.5/10 ('buy with conditions') and insists on a documented history.

Known faults

Tandem pump recall (oil supply and brake assistance)

Manufacturer recall

A recall campaign (Kia code 221048) concerns Ceed, XCeed, ProCeed and Ceed SW vehicles built in 2018-2020: a clogged filter in the tandem pump can impair brake assistance and lengthen stopping distances. Have a Kia dealer check, using the serial number, that the recall has been carried out.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Fire risk recall: hydraulic clutch actuator (plug-in hybrid)

Manufacturer recall

European recall (Kia code 240S01, Safety Gate alert SR/00217/25, January 2025) concerning XCeed and Ceed plug-in hybrids built between late 2019 and 14 August 2023: a liquid can contaminate the circuit board of the hydraulic clutch actuator and cause a short circuit, then a fire in the engine bay while driving. At an approved workshop, the actuator is checked, replaced if necessary, and a lower-rated fuse is fitted. The sources differ on the start date of production: rely on the serial number.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€158
Insurance€85
Maintenance€28
Depreciation€188
Total per month€459

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Consumption taken from a published range (depends on trim and tyres).
  • Insurance: brand average, as no average is published for this model.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.

Fuel (petrol)€158

1.0 T-GDi 120 version: combined consumption of 6.4 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

6.4 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €158

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask a Kia dealer, using the serial number, whether the tandem pump recall (2018-2020 builds) has been carried out.
  • Plug-in hybrid: check with the serial number that the hydraulic clutch actuator recall (code 240S01) has been carried out.
  • 1.6 CRDi diesel: insist on a documented service history and watch for the emissions warning light, frequent regenerations or AdBlue messages.
  • DCT7 gearbox: test when cold and at very low speed to detect jerking or vibrations.
  • Plug-in hybrid: check the charging and the real electric range (48 km WLTP claimed).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the recalls (tandem pump, and clutch actuator for the plug-in hybrid) been carried out? Do you have the proof?
  • Is the service book complete, in particular for the diesel (particulate filter, AdBlue)?
  • Has the DCT gearbox been diagnosed or repaired?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Frequently asked questions

What Euro NCAP rating does the Kia XCeed have?

Euro NCAP has not tested the XCeed itself (La Tribune Auto, Parkers). Kia states that the Ceed, from which it is derived, achieved 5 stars in 2019 with the optional driver assistance systems, and 4 without them; Parkers considers these results valid for the XCeed.

What is the boot capacity of the Kia XCeed?

426 litres (1,378 litres with the rear bench folded) for most petrol versions, around 380 litres for the 1.6 CRDi 136 diesel and 291 litres for the plug-in hybrid (Caroom, Automobile Propre).

Is the Kia XCeed plug-in hybrid subject to a recall?

Yes: a recall (code 240S01) concerns XCeed PHEVs built between late 2019 and August 2023, because of a risk of short circuit and fire linked to the hydraulic clutch actuator. Its completion should be checked using the serial number.
