Verdict
First Ferrari with an all-aluminium body, with a 400 hp 3.6 V8 (0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 s according to Fiches-auto), considered fairly reliable and usable day to day by Autocar. Points to watch are the F1 robotised gearbox (clutch, hydraulics, pump relay), the exhaust manifolds and maintenance: timing belts every three years and a complete history required. A pre-purchase inspection by a Ferrari specialist is essential.

Which version to choose
Versions to favour: Modena 3.6 V8 400 manuelle, Spider 3.6 V8 400 manuelle.
Modena 3.6 V8 400 manuelle
✓ RecommendedPetrol · Manual · 400 hp · Crit'Air 3
Coupé, 400 hp 3.6 V8 at 8,500 rpm and 373 Nm, 6-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive (Fiches-auto). Fewer than 30% of buyers chose it (Petrolicious): rarer, and one owner notes that the absence of F1 avoids most of the trouble.
Modena 3.6 V8 400 F1
Petrol · Automatic · 400 hp · Crit'Air 3
Coupé, same V8 with the 6-speed F1 robotised gearbox with a single-disc clutch (Fiches-auto). The most common; it can be jerky in town and its clutch wears out faster there (Petrolicious).
Spider 3.6 V8 400 manuelle
✓ RecommendedPetrol · Manual · 400 hp · Crit'Air 3
Convertible launched in 2000, mechanically identical to the coupé with an electric hood; 130 lb more according to Petrolicious.
Spider 3.6 V8 400 F1
Petrol · Automatic · 400 hp · Crit'Air 3
Convertible with the F1 robotised gearbox, same checkpoints as the F1 coupé.
Challenge Stradale 3.6 V8 425 F1
Petrol · Automatic · 425 hp · Crit'Air 3
Lightweight version from 2003 (420 bhp according to Petrolicious), carbon-ceramic brakes as standard, Perspex windows, no radio. Carbon-ceramic discs are very expensive to replace: examine closely (Petrolicious).

Known faults
F1 gearbox: relay and hydraulic pump, actuator leaks
Severity 2/3 · CostlyFiches-auto reports an undersized F1 gearbox pump relay that can stick and leave the pump running continuously; replacing it regularly is advised. Aldous Voice describes the same mechanism (relay contacts welded, pump running until failure) and notes these pumps are inexpensive. Autocar advises looking for leaks from the hydraulic actuators on an F1.

F1 gearbox: rapid clutch wear
Severity 2/3 · CostlyThe single-disc clutch lasts about 30,000 miles but wears much faster in town (Petrolicious). Aldous Voice cites more than 20,000 miles for a well-adjusted F1 clutch driven gently, and under 10,000 miles otherwise, with a sudden drop into neutral as a sign of wear. Autocar advises reading the clutch wear index in the gearbox control unit. An owner cited by Fiches-auto mentions a clutch at 50,000 km.

Cracked exhaust manifolds
Severity 2/3 · CostlyAldous Voice says the manifolds are prone to breaking (less so than on the F430): a crack in one branch can spread to the others, with a ticking sound when cold that disappears when hot; a second generation of manifolds exists but can also break. An owner cited by Fiches-auto puts the manifolds at the top of his list of problems.

Camshaft timing variator (early cars)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyEarly cars suffered premature failures of the cam variator; Petrolicious notes that everything should have been corrected at dealerships and advises checking it on a pre-2001 model. Aldous Voice says almost all received the modified part.

Worn ball joints, steering tie rods and bushes
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingAutocar notes that the suspension, while reliable, has an appetite for ball joints and steering tie rods. Petrolicious states that ball joints wear roughly every 10,000 miles (knocking over bumps). An owner cited by Fiches-auto advises changing the bushes regularly.

Engine mounts cracked by vibration
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingThe flat-plane crankshaft vibrates enough to crack the engine mounts after about 20,000 miles (Autocar); replacement around 20,000 miles is not uncommon according to Aldous Voice.

Worn ignition coils
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingAldous Voice: the plug-top coils wear out (under 50 pounds each) and a faulty coil can send unburnt fuel to the catalytic converter and damage it. Autocar cites hesitations possibly due to end-of-life coils.

Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €441 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €79 |
| Maintenance | €178 |
| Depreciation | €949 |
| Total per month | €1,647 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Maintenance: budget of a closely related model.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (petrol)€441
Modena 3.6 V8 400 manuelle version: combined consumption of 17.9 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

Things to check
- Demand the full service record: annual service and timing belts every three years, with tensioner pulleys (Autocar, Aldous Voice).
- F1: look for leaks at the hydraulic actuators, have the clutch wear index and fault codes read, and ask for the age of the pump relay.
- Listen for a ticking from the exhaust (manifolds) when cold, and check the engine mounts.
- Ball joints, steering tie rods and bushes: listen for knocking and check steering play.
- Before 2001: ask for proof that the cam variator was replaced. Challenge Stradale: condition of the carbon-ceramic discs.
Questions to ask the seller
- On what date and at what mileage were the timing belts and clutch changed?
- For an F1: what is the clutch wear index read from the control unit, and has the pump relay been replaced?
- Have the exhaust manifolds and cam variator been replaced? Do you have invoices from a Ferrari specialist?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Frequently asked questions
Should you choose the manual or the F1 gearbox on a Ferrari 360?
Petrolicious considers both gearboxes reliable if maintained, the F1 being able to be jerky in town with a clutch that wears faster. Fewer than 30% of buyers took the manual, so it is rarer. One owner cited by Fiches-auto believes the F1 causes most of the problems.
How often should the timing belt of a Ferrari 360 be changed?
Every three years according to Autocar and Aldous Voice, with the tensioners. On the 360, the job is done by removing a panel behind the seats, without removing the engine (Autocar).
Has the Ferrari 360 been tested by Euro NCAP?
No: Parkers notes it was not submitted to Euro NCAP assessment, and AutoScout24 states it has no official Euro NCAP rating. It has two airbags, with no side airbags (Parkers).
