Verdict

Good choice, check first

Sports car judged overall reliable by What Car? provided it has been well maintained, but the recurring faults (differential seals, active exhaust valves, battery and electronics) are not always simple to repair. It was not tested by Euro NCAP. An inspection by a specialist and a complete service history from Jaguar are essential before buying.

Known faults

Rear differential oil leak

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Owners report that the rear differential can leak through faulty seals (What Car?). Overtightening the coupling after a repair can also damage the differential, the first sign being a noise from the rear (CarChecker).

Stuck active exhaust valves

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The active exhaust valves can stay stuck in the open position, which may require a new rear silencer, often fitted under warranty (What Car?). A technical bulletin describes a squeal caused by partial or total seizing of the valve shaft and its bush, fixed with revised parts.

Weak battery and electrical faults

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

A weak or discharged battery causes a variety of faults: doors, windows, convertible roof, car not starting (What Car?). Some software updates at the dealer fix a discharge while parked. The CarChecker guide also cites battery discharge at standstill among the main points of concern; on convertibles, roof problems are most often linked to the battery (Autotrader.ca).

Front seatbelt pretensioner recall (2017 model, built in 2016)

Manufacturer recall

NHTSA recall 16V940: the front seatbelt pretensioners may not deploy in a serious accident, increasing the risk of injury. The recall concerns F-Types built from 14 July to 16 December 2016 (2017 model year); dealers inspect and replace the belts free of charge. US recall: check the serial number with a Jaguar dealer. What Car? also reports a recall for faulty pretensioners on cars built in 2016.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask for the complete service history from Jaguar and have a dealer confirm that recalls and software updates have been carried out.
  • Have the battery tested and check for error messages when cold (doors, windows, roof on convertibles).
  • Check the underbody: oil traces at the rear differential and the condition of the cooling hoses (V8).
  • Listen to the active exhaust at every valve opening: squeal or a valve left open.
  • Convertible: operate the roof several times; check for noises from the central vent and the retractable door handles.
  • Have a pre-purchase inspection carried out by a Jaguar specialist.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has servicing been done at Jaguar, with invoices?
  • Have the battery, differential or exhaust been repaired or replaced, and was it under warranty?
  • Have the recalls (including the seatbelts on cars built in 2016) and software updates been carried out?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
