PSA / Stellantis 2.0 BlueHDi (DW10F) engine: reliability and faults

Verdict

A four-cylinder diesel of 1,997 cm³ with a timing belt, launched in 2013 in 150 and 180 hp (then 160 hp on the 2018 508). A robust and willing engine, generally considered durable, but its emissions system is fragile: the AdBlue system (tank, pump, injector) is prone to faults, along with the EGR valve, and the particulate filter can crack on engines built from 2017 to 2022 (recall campaign). Avoid it if you mainly drive in town; check the particulate filter recall and the AdBlue history.

Known faults

Faulty AdBlue system (tank, pump, urea injector)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The most frequently cited weak point of the 2.0 BlueHDi is the AdBlue SCR emissions system. Depending on the case, the tank, pump, AdBlue injector (which can crystallise at high mileage) or level sensor fails. The AdBlue tank tends to age badly. When a fault occurs, a warning light comes on and the engine eventually refuses to start until the repair is done.

EGR valve

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

EGR valve failures are reported on the 2.0 BlueHDi 180, sometimes very early (a 2015 308 GT at 3,600 km), more often through clogging around 120,000 km according to CarVerif. Like the particulate filter, it does not cope well with exclusively urban use.

Cracked particulate filter (recall campaign)

Manufacturer recall

On 2.0 BlueHDi engines built from March 2017 to January 2022, the particulate filter can overheat and crack, increasing polluting emissions without a safety risk. Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel launched a recall campaign (308, 3008, 5008, 508, C5 Aircross, DS 7 Crossback, Grandland X): the filter is checked and replaced if necessary, at the manufacturer's expense. Check that the work has been carried out.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
