Verdict
Well-protected saloon or SW estate (5 stars at Euro NCAP in 2018) with a 487 L boot (530 L in the SW). The 1.2 PureTech 130 and the 1.5 BlueHDi 130 combine documented serious faults, the diesels are exposed to AdBlue problems, and the plug-in hybrid has been subject to recalls for battery fire risk. CarVerif concludes it can be bought under conditions, with complete servicing and a cold test drive.

Known faults
Degraded “wet” timing belt (1.2 PureTech)
Severity 3/3 · SeriousOn the 1.2 PureTech, the timing belt runs in oil and can disintegrate. Its debris clogs the oil strainer, causing oil pressure to drop, which can destroy the engine. Stellantis extended the belt warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, subject to servicing conditions, and introduced a new-generation belt in June 2022.

Oil consumption (1.2 PureTech)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyBesides belt wear, the 1.2 PureTech is known for high oil consumption, which can cause engine damage if the level is not monitored. According to Caradisiac, engines built from 2023 onwards are no longer affected.

Premature wear of the timing chain (1.5 BlueHDi)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyOn the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5), the timing chain can stretch prematurely because of oil carbonisation; the first sign is a rattle on cold start. A break can damage the engine. Vehicles built between 6 December 2017 and 31 January 2023 are subject to a recall.

Faulty AdBlue tank and system (BlueHDi diesels)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyOwner reviews of the 508 II 2.0 BlueHDi 180 (2018 and 2020) cite AdBlue as a weak point: AdBlue crystallisation in the tank, with towing and several weeks off the road; Peugeot's contribution to the bill was limited to about half in one case. CarVerif also lists the AdBlue system among the warnings on the 1.5 BlueHDi and advises against a car showing an AdBlue or emissions message.

Faulty electronic throttle body (1.6 PureTech 180)
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingOn 1.6 PureTech 180s built up to September 2019, the electronic throttle body can malfunction: a diagnostic warning light and loss of power. Its body was later changed from plastic to aluminium, and Peugeot agreed to cover the repair outside warranty. CarVerif then reports mainly isolated cases.

Battery fire-risk recalls (plug-in hybrid)
Manufacturer recallSeveral recall campaigns target the traction battery of the plug-in hybrid 508: abnormal cell voltage on vehicles built from 1 October to 13 December 2019, with a risk of overheating and, in extreme cases, fire (recall detailed by Caradisiac), then further campaigns on batteries built from 2019 (overheating, battery management software, water ingress, according to the car-recalls.eu aggregator). Check with the serial number that all the campaigns have been completed.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Insist on service invoices: oil changes at the correct interval with the recommended oil, and belt checks (PureTech).
- Check the oil level when cold and ask whether topping up is needed between oil changes.
- Ask a Peugeot dealer, using the serial number, which recalls have been carried out and whether the car is eligible for warranty extensions.
- 1.5 BlueHDi diesel: listen to the cold start; a rattle can indicate a slack chain.
- Plug-in hybrid: note the serial number and have Peugeot check that the battery recalls have been carried out.
- Diesel: check the dashboard for any AdBlue or emissions message and review the top-up history.
Questions to ask the seller
- Do you have all the service invoices, with the oil references used?
- Have the recall campaigns (1.5 BlueHDi chain, hybrid battery) been carried out at Peugeot?
- Has there ever been an AdBlue message or an emissions warning light?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
