Verdict

Extra caution

Urban SUV with a 350 L boot, rated 5 stars at Euro NCAP in 2013 on the basis of the 208's results. The 1.2 PureTech (wet belt, oil consumption, recalls on the braking assistance) and the late 1.5 BlueHDi (timing chain) have documented serious faults; CarVerif considers the service history more important than the mileage.

Known faults

Degraded “wet” timing belt (1.2 PureTech)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.2 PureTech, the timing belt runs in oil and can disintegrate. Its debris clogs the oil strainer, causing oil pressure to drop, which can destroy the engine; it can also damage the vacuum pump and reduce braking assistance. The 2008s with 1.2 PureTech 110 and 130 engines built from 2013 to 2017 were subject to a recall (Peugeot code JZR: inspection and, if needed, belt replacement, plus a software update); 2008s built from April 2017 to December 2020 are subject to another recall for a vacuum pump lubrication fault. The 82 hp naturally aspirated engine also has a wet belt: Caradisiac officially says it is spared, but NTN-SNR lists it among the affected engines. Stellantis extended the belt warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, subject to servicing conditions.

Oil consumption (1.2 PureTech)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The 1.2 PureTech can consume a lot of oil, up to engine failure if the level is not monitored. L'argus lists oil consumption and the cylinder head among the points to watch on petrol 2008 I models. Stellantis (Citroën UK) attributes this fault to piston ring segmentation on engines built from April 2014 to July 2018, then to the oil separator on those built from February 2018 to February 2023; it is covered by the warranty extension subject to servicing conditions.

Premature wear of the timing chain (1.5 BlueHDi)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5), the timing chain can stretch prematurely because of oil carbonisation; the first sign is a rattle on cold start. A break can damage the engine. Vehicles built between 6 December 2017 and 31 January 2023 are subject to a recall.

Faulty AdBlue tank (BlueHDi diesels)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On BlueHDi diesels built up to the end of 2022, the AdBlue system (tank with integrated sensor and AdBlue injector) can fail: a warning announces that the car will not start after a certain mileage, and the complete tank often has to be replaced. UFC-Que Choisir referred the matter to the DGCCRF (consumer fraud authority) in 2023 after more than 5,000 testimonies. Owners of 2008 1.6 BlueHDi report this fault.

Jerks from the ETG6 automated gearbox

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The ETG6 is a manual gearbox whose clutch and gear changes are motorised: its first generation is criticised for jerks and slowness. Owners of the 2008 e-HDi 92 ETG6 describe harsh shifts, particularly at roundabouts; CarVerif advises rejecting a car with clear jerks or a clutch that slips on test.

Manufacturer recalls

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€108
Insurance€97
Maintenance€29
Depreciation€90
Total per month€324

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€108

e-HDi 115 version: combined consumption of 4 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

4 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €108

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Insist on service invoices: oil changes at the correct interval with the recommended oil, and belt checks (PureTech).
  • Check the oil level when cold and ask whether topping up is needed between oil changes.
  • Ask a Peugeot dealer, using the serial number, which recalls have been carried out and whether the car is eligible for warranty extensions.
  • 1.5 BlueHDi diesel: listen to the cold start; a rattle can indicate a slack chain.
  • PureTech: ask for proof that the belt and vacuum pump (braking assistance) recalls have been carried out.
  • e-HDi 92 ETG6: test the gearbox cold, when manoeuvring and when creeping; reject it if there are clear jerks or the clutch slips.
  • BlueHDi diesel: check there is no AdBlue or emissions warning, and ask whether the AdBlue tank has been replaced.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have all the service invoices, with the oil references used?
  • Has the timing belt (or the chain on the 1.5 diesel) been checked or replaced?
  • Have the manufacturer's recalls (belt, vacuum pump, 1.5 BlueHDi chain) been carried out?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
