Verdict

Good choice, check first

Compact SUV rated five stars by Euro NCAP in 2017. The documented points of concern are the CVT gearbox (reports of jerking) and a French recall for unintended emergency braking, fixed by reprogramming: check that the recall has been carried out and try the gearbox before buying.

Known faults

CVT gearbox: jerking and delayed response

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Sources report jerking and a delayed response from the CVT gearbox, sometimes between 30,000 and 60,000 km, especially with the 1.5 turbo (Autodoc). A buyer's guide advises checking for CVT shuddering during the test drive on the 2018 and 2019 model years (RerEV). The sources are of uneven quality.

Unintended emergency braking (software recall)

Manufacturer recall

A software fault in the front camera can trigger emergency braking for no reason. Recall in France (notably the 2018-2020 Eclipse Cross and 2021 PHEV), fixed by reprogramming without any part being replaced (L'argus).

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Using the chassis number, check with a Mitsubishi dealer that the recalls (emergency braking, wheel arch extensions) have been carried out.
  • CVT gearbox: extended test drive, especially pulling away and gentle acceleration, to detect jerking or shuddering.
  • Ask for the service history, in particular the gearbox oil changes.
  • Plug-in hybrid: ask for a battery state-of-health check and confirm that charging works properly.
  • Check that the wheel arch extensions are securely fixed (recall in France on 2018 to 2020 models).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the emergency braking software recall been carried out? Do you have proof?
  • Has the CVT gearbox shown jerking, and has it been serviced or repaired?
  • What is the complete service history of the vehicle?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
