Verdict

Buy with care

Compact hybrid SUV rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2019, with a 184 hp 2.0 hybrid (250h), later 199 hp from late 2023 (300h), and an electric version, the 300e. Sources on reliability are few: only one recall, for a brake booster pump on UX 250h models built in May 2019, is documented, and it should be checked by serial number.

Known faults

Faulty brake booster pump (UX 250h recall, 2019)

Manufacturer recall

Lexus recalled certain 2019 UX 250h models (about 275 vehicles built in May 2019 according to the NHTSA procedure): the brake booster pump may have been poorly assembled and stop working, causing loss of brake assistance and a longer stopping distance. The pump is replaced free of charge at a dealer. US recall: check with the serial number whether your car is affected and whether the work has been done.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Real monthly cost

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€135
Insurance€99
Maintenance€28
Depreciation€259
Total per month€521

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Consumption taken from a published range (depends on trim and tyres).
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€135

UX 250h version: combined consumption of 5.5 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

5.5 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €135

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Check with a Lexus dealer, using the serial number, which recalls are open or completed (in particular the brake booster pump on a 2019 UX 250h).
  • Have the fault codes read and check the dashboard warning lights.
  • Test the touch controls of the infotainment system, which are considered imprecise and distracting while driving.
  • Electric: ask for the real range and the battery condition (54.3 or 72.8 kWh).
  • Check the service book and the invoices from Lexus.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the recalls been dealt with, with proof?
  • Has the servicing been carried out in the Lexus network, with invoices?
  • For the 300e: which battery (54.3 or 72.8 kWh), and what real range are you seeing?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
