Verdict

Good choice, check first

A large luxury saloon with either a petrol V8 (LS 460, 380 hp) or a hybrid V8 (LS 600h, 445 hp). Two safety recalls (fuel supply pipe, variable-ratio steering) affected these models: check with the VIN that the work has been done. Air suspension, where fitted, is the main reported cost.

Known faults

Air suspension: leaks and compressor

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Leaks in the air springs cause the car to sag when parked, and the compressor, which compensates, eventually fails (CarChecker, Au7o). CarChecker estimates the compressor at 2,500-3,000 euros at a dealership and each leg at 1,000-1,800 euros (third-party estimate, not official).

Recall: fuel leak at the supply pipe

Manufacturer recall

Worldwide recall (NHTSA campaign 14V-647): residue from anti-corrosion plating can allow fuel to leak at the pressure sensor location on the fuel rail, with a risk of fire. Concerns LS 460 and LS 600h cars built between 2006 and 2010. The free remedy at a dealership is cleaning and resealing.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: variable-ratio steering (control unit)

Manufacturer recall

Recall 10V218: a programming fault in the variable gear ratio steering control unit (VGRS) can wrongly trigger the steering end-stop protection, leaving the steering wheel off-centre by up to 90 degrees. Concerns LS 460 and LS 600h cars built between August 2009 and May 2010. Free remedy: replacement of the control unit.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Lexus LS”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€273
Insurance€96
Maintenance€27
Depreciation€200
Total per month€596

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Insurance: brand average, as no average is published for this model.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€273

LS 460 version: combined consumption of 11.1 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

11.1 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €273

Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€96

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Depreciation€200

Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Check with the VIN, at Lexus, that the fuel supply pipe recall (14V-647) has been carried out; for 2009-2010 cars, also check the steering recall (10V218).
  • Air suspension: check that the car does not sag after a night parked and that all four corners are at the same height.
  • Listen to see whether the suspension compressor runs continuously.
  • Check that there is no smell of petrol in the engine bay.
  • Ask for the service book and dealership invoices.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the Lexus safety recalls been carried out? Do you have proof?
  • Has the air suspension already been repaired (compressor, legs)?
  • What exact year and version is it (LS 460 or LS 600h)?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
