Verdict

Good choice, check first

A recent luxury SUV with 5 Euro NCAP stars (November 2022). Little fault history is available: the point to watch is the air suspension, which was the subject of a manufacturer technical bulletin. Preferably buy with the manufacturer warranty or an extended warranty, and a complete service history.

Air suspension warning

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Jaguar Land Rover published a technical bulletin in May 2023 for the Range Rover L460 (and Range Rover Sport L461): air suspension warning light and a "stop safely" message with fault code U3000-49 stored in the EESM control unit. The procedure calls for a software update then, if that fails, replacement of the control unit. Owners on a forum describe a fault that returned after the update.

Recall: front impact sensors insufficiently tightened (2022)

Manufacturer recall

Recall N685 (NHTSA campaign 22V320): the front impact sensor mountings on 19 US vehicles built in February 2022 could be insufficiently tightened, with a risk of faulty or unintended airbag deployment. Remedy: tightening at the dealer. A limited series, but worth checking on an early-production car.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Land Rover Range Rover”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the fault codes read, in particular those for the air suspension (U3000-49), and check for software updates at Land Rover.
  • Test the suspension: height changes, no warning message, car level after parking.
  • Have open recalls checked with the serial number, especially on a car from early 2022.
  • Plug-in hybrid: check the battery condition and the charging history.
  • Check the service book and the remaining manufacturer warranty period.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has an air suspension warning message ever appeared? Do you have the repair orders?
  • Have the software updates and recalls been carried out at Land Rover?
  • How much warranty is left, and has the car been serviced within the dealer network?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
