Known faults

Crankshaft failure / big-end bearings (V6 diesel)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

Land Rover bulletin SSM71816 lists the L494 Range Rover Sport among the models affected by rare crankshaft failures on the TDV6 V6 diesel, attributed to half-bearings incorrectly positioned during assembly or that rotate in use. Owners on the RRSport forum describe the problem as rare but report cases, including on the SDV6; Fiches-auto reports a testimony of sudden engine failure on a 292 hp 3.0 SDV6 at around 80,000 km. A metallic noise or an oil pressure warning light requires the engine to be switched off immediately.

Air suspension (compressor, springs, valve block)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The air suspension compressor and valve block are reported as a weak point: the compressor wears out as it compensates for leaks from the air springs. Warning signs: a noisy compressor or one that runs for a long time, a car that sags overnight, floating handling.

ZF 8HP70 automatic gearbox: jerks and limp mode

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Owner reports describe jerks, delayed shifts and limp mode, attributed to the hydraulic unit (mechatronics) of the 8-speed ZF 8HP70 gearbox. A JLR bulletin (SGI14-25) also concerns 2014 Range Rover Sports whose gearbox filter can come loose from the casing, causing harsh shifts and a warning message (limited VIN range). Check that the gearbox oil used is the correct ZF oil.

Manufacturer recalls

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€202
Insurance€81
Maintenance€28
Depreciation€392
Total per month€703

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€202

3.0 SDV6 306 version: combined consumption of 7.5 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

7.5 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €202

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask for the full service book (regular oil changes) and have the engine listened to when cold; any metallic noise or oil pressure warning light is a deal-breaker.
  • Air suspension: car sagging after a night, a noisy compressor or one that takes very long to inflate, height fault messages on the dashboard are reasons to walk away.
  • Automatic gearbox: test drive with cold and warm shifts, without jerks or limp mode; check the ZF oil used during servicing.
  • Have fault codes read and check recalls and bulletins with the serial number at a Land Rover dealer.
  • P400e hybrid: check the charging history and the actual electric range.

Questions to ask the seller

  • What servicing has been carried out at Land Rover or by a specialist, and with which engine oil?
  • Has the air suspension (compressor, springs) already been repaired? Do you have the invoices?
  • Have the recalls and updates (gearbox, engine) been carried out? Can this be checked with the serial number?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
