Verdict
Well-protected family SUV (5 stars at Euro NCAP in 2014, confirmed in 2022). The 2.0 Ingenium diesels built before 2019 are prone to timing chain faults that can be costly: the service history (close oil changes) is decisive. Facelifted versions and the plug-in hybrid are less well documented.

✓ RecommendedDiesel · Manual · 150 hp · 5.7 L/100 km · 149 g CO₂/km · Crit'Air 2
2.0 Ingenium diesel with 380 Nm, 6-speed manual gearbox. Affected by timing chain warnings: service history essential.
TD4 180
Diesel · Automatic · 180 hp · Crit'Air 2
2.0 Ingenium diesel with 430 Nm. Same engine family as the TD4 150.
D180 mild hybrid
Diesel · Automatic · 178 hp · Crit'Air 2
Diesel from the 2019 facelift with 48 V mild-hybrid system (announced fuel consumption gain of about 7%). Test comment: less lively than its 430 Nm would suggest.
P300e
Hybrid · Automatic · 309 hp · Crit'Air 1
Plug-in hybrid: 200 hp three-cylinder 1.5 and a 109 hp electric motor, 15 kWh battery (12.7 kWh usable), four-wheel drive. Claimed electric range around 60 km, about 40 km observed in cold weather during a test.

Known faults
2.0 Ingenium diesel timing chain
Severity 3/3 · SeriousOn early 2.0 Ingenium diesels (mainly before 2019), the chain can stretch and the tensioner can wear out: cold rattle, camshaft correlation fault codes and, if the chain breaks, major engine damage. Oil dilution from particulate filter regenerations and extended oil change intervals are cited as aggravating factors. These guides partly come from parts sellers; no manufacturer recall was found for this fault.

Manufacturer recalls
See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Land Rover Discovery Sport”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.
Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €154 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €72 |
| Maintenance | €28 |
| Depreciation | €202 |
| Total per month | €456 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Insurance: brand average, as no average is published for this model.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (diesel)€154
TD4 150 manuelle version: combined consumption of 5.7 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
5.7 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €154
Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.
- Insurance€72
Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.
- Maintenance€28
Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.
- Depreciation€202
Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.
Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Diesel 2.0: ask for oil change invoices (actual interval) and have a cold start listened to (chain rattle).
- Have the engine fault codes read and check the oil level (possible dilution).
- Check the turbo, particulate filter and AdBlue: warning lights, smoke, frequent regenerations.
- Check with the VIN at Land Rover that the recalls (airbag, fuel hoses, seatbelt depending on build period) have been carried out.
- P300e: check the battery condition and the real electric range, as well as the charging cable.
Questions to ask the seller
- What is the actual interval between oil changes, and do you have the invoices?
- Have the timing chain, turbo or particulate filter already been replaced?
- Have all manufacturer recalls been carried out at Land Rover?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Check the history
Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.
Read fault codes
An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Land Rover Discovery Sport safe?
Yes: it scored five stars at Euro NCAP in 2014 (93% adults, 83% children), then five stars again in a new test in 2022, under a stricter protocol.
What is the weak point of the pre-2019 Discovery Sport diesel?
The timing chain of the 2.0 Ingenium, cited by several buying guides, with a risk of engine failure if not monitored. Regular servicing is essential.
What is the power of the Discovery Sport P300e?
309 hp combined: a 200 hp 1.5 three-cylinder and a 109 hp electric motor, with a 15 kWh battery.
