Verdict

Buy with care

Premium SUV rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP (2017), sold with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Caradisiac reports many failures on the first 2.0 D 180 hp engines, sometimes leading to engine destruction: a complete service history is essential, and 2016-2017 models should have been covered by the Takata airbag recall.

Known faults

Timing chain of the 2.0 Ingenium diesel

Severity 3/3 · Serious

The timing chains of the 2.0 diesel stretch over time; if not replaced, they can cause irreparable engine failure (Stedmans Garage). A metallic noise when cold is the warning sign; LR Direct cites chain wear and a weak tensioner. These sources are workshops and a parts seller.

Takata driver airbag recall (2016-2017 model years)

Manufacturer recall

The Takata driver airbag propellant (ammonium nitrate) can degrade with heat and humidity; on deployment, the housing may rupture and throw metal fragments. The remedy is replacing the driver airbag module. Recall concerning F-Pace 2016-2017 models: check that it has been carried out.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Jaguar F-Pace”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Consumption taken from a published range (depends on trim and tyres).

  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • 2.0 diesel: listen for any metallic noise when cold (timing chain) and insist on a complete service history with regular oil changes.
  • Diesel: watch for a turbo whistle or a switch to limp mode during the test drive.
  • 2016-2017 model: have a Jaguar dealer confirm that the Takata airbag recall has been carried out (serial number).
  • Have an electronic diagnostic check done and verify the software updates and manufacturer recalls.
  • P400e: ask for the real electric range on battery and the condition of the charging system.

Questions to ask the seller

  • What servicing and work has been done on the engine (timing, turbo)? Do you have the invoices?
  • Has the driver airbag recall been carried out at Jaguar?
  • What is the exact engine (registration document) and has the engine already been replaced?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
