Verdict

Good choice, check first

Large motorway car rated 5 Euro NCAP stars in 2014, with a generous boot in petrol versions. It has been the subject of a European recall for fire risk linked to the battery monitoring sensor: check that it has been dealt with. The PowerShift automatic gearbox and the EGR of the 2.0 TDCi are the points to check; the 180 hp hybrid is judged the most reassuring by Carverif.

Which version to choose

Versions to favour: 1.5 EcoBoost 160, 2.0 Hybrid 187.

  • 1.0 EcoBoost 125

    Petrol · Manual · 125 hp · Crit'Air 1

Three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost, manual gearbox, introduced in 2015.

Verdict on this engine: Buy with care

  • 1.5 EcoBoost 160

    ✓ Recommended

    Petrol · Manual · 160 hp · 5.8 L/100 km · 134 g CO₂/km · Crit'Air 1

1.5 EcoBoost with 240 Nm, 6-speed manual gearbox: the simplest petrol choice.

  • 2.0 TDCi 150

    Diesel · Manual · 150 hp · Crit'Air 2

2.0 TDCi with 350 Nm, available with manual (and PowerShift); choose the manual to avoid the dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

  • 2.0 TDCi 180 PowerShift

    Diesel · Automatic · 180 hp · Crit'Air 2

2.0 TDCi with 180 hp and PowerShift 6-speed gearbox, sometimes with four-wheel drive. A gearbox service history is essential.

  • 2.0 Hybrid 187

    ✓ Recommended

    Hybrid · Automatic · 187 hp · Crit'Air 1

2.0 petrol hybrid with a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. Reduced boot (383 L in the saloon): the rear seat does not fold.

Known faults

PowerShift automatic gearbox: jolts and clutch wear

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The PowerShift dual-clutch automatic gearbox is the most cited weak point: jerky or delayed gear changes, vibrations, slipping. A Swedish buying guide cites problems on the early years of the Mk5, with clutch wear between 80,000 and 140,000 km, and a software fix. Regular fluid servicing is advised.

2.0 TDCi: EGR / particulate filter fouling and EGR cooler

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The recurring faults of the 2.0 TDCi concern the emissions system (particulate filter, EGR valve), especially in urban use. A Swedish guide also cites an EGR cooler that can crack, causing coolant loss. One owner of a 2014 Mondeo 150 hp reports a seized EGR valve, resolved by cleaning.

Recall: battery monitoring sensor (fire risk)

Manufacturer recall

Ford recalled around 322,000 vehicles in Europe (Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy): copper sulphate can build up under the battery monitoring sensor and cause heating, even when the car is stationary. The affected Mondeos were built between February 2014 and February 2019; the inspection and repair are free.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€143
Insurance€61
Maintenance€37
Depreciation€125
Total per month€366

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€143

1.5 EcoBoost 160 version: combined consumption of 5.8 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

5.8 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €143

Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€61

Depreciation€125

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Check with the serial number that the battery monitoring sensor recall has been carried out at Ford.
  • PowerShift gearbox: test drive cold and in slow traffic, listening for jolts, vibration on pull-off or slipping; require gearbox oil change invoices.
  • Diesel: check for no engine warning light, no coolant loss, and the history of EGR/particulate filter cleaning.
  • Hybrid: ask for a high-voltage battery diagnosis, and check the available boot volume.
  • Check the complete service book.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the battery monitoring sensor recall been carried out? Do you have proof?
  • Has the automatic gearbox had oil changes, updates or repairs?
  • How was the diesel used (short or long journeys), and have the EGR or particulate filter been treated?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ford Mondeo IV safe?

It achieved 5 stars at Euro NCAP in 2014 (86% adult, 82% child, 66% pedestrian) and kept this rating in a new test in 2019.

What is the boot capacity of the Mondeo IV?

541 litres for the 5-door saloon according to Auto Express (550 L according to other sources). The hybrid saloon only offers 383 litres because the battery takes up boot space.

Is there a recall on the Mondeo IV?

Yes: a European recall concerns the battery monitoring sensor (fire risk), for vehicles built between February 2014 and February 2019. The repair is free at Ford.
