Verdict

Good choice, check first

Mid-engined supercar with a 720 hp 3.9 twin-turbo V8 and a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which PistonHeads rates as exemplary for reliability. It was subject to a safety recall on the brake fluid reservoir cap (2020-2022) and, on some 2023 F8 Spiders, a recall on the driveshaft bolts, both to be checked against the chassis number. The battery needs to be kept on a charger. A pre-purchase inspection remains essential.

Battery discharge

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Exotic Car Hacks reports cases of a discharged battery when the car is not connected to a trickle charger, with starting difficulties and error messages on the dashboard. PistonHeads reminds readers that owners of this type of car leave it on a trickle charger, and that the manual calls for battery checks in case of difficult starting (a lithium battery is offered as an option at 1,920 pounds sterling).

Recall: brake fluid reservoir cap

Manufacturer recall

On the F8 Tributo and F8 Spider from 2020 to 2022, the brake fluid reservoir cap may not vent properly, creating a vacuum in the reservoir and causing a fluid leak that can lead to partial or total loss of braking (NHTSA, recall 22V536, extension of recall 21V-833). Dealers replace the cap free of charge and update the dashboard software (low brake fluid level message). PistonHeads and Exotic Car Hacks also cite this recall.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: driveshaft bolts (F8 Spider 2023)

Manufacturer recall

Ferrari is recalling some Portofino M, 2023 F8 Spider and 2024 Roma Spider cars: the driveshaft bolts may not have been tightened during production and could loosen, which can lead to loss of traction and control (NHTSA, recall 24V810, 4 vehicles affected in the United States). Affected owners are advised not to drive the car; the dealer checks the bolts and retightens them free of charge if needed.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Check with the chassis number at a Ferrari dealer that the brake fluid reservoir cap recall (22V536) has been carried out (NHTSA).
  • On a 2023 F8 Spider, check whether it is covered by the driveshaft bolt recall (24V810) (NHTSA).
  • Check the condition of the battery and ask whether the car has been kept on a trickle charger (Exotic Car Hacks, PistonHeads).
  • Examine the bonnet and the aluminium body panels: blistering under the paint has been reported (Exotic Car Hacks).
  • Ask for the complete service history and have a pre-purchase inspection carried out by a Ferrari dealer or an independent specialist (Exotic Car Hacks, PistonHeads).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the brake fluid reservoir cap recall been carried out? Can you provide the proof?
  • Does the car have a complete service history with the Ferrari network, and is a transferable warranty or warranty extension still in force?
  • Has the battery been replaced, and was the car connected to a trickle charger?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
