Buy with care

The first mid-engined Corvette, sold in Europe from the second half of 2021, in Stingray, Z06 (5.5 L naturally aspirated V8) and E-Ray hybrid versions. The best-documented fault concerns the Tremec dual-clutch gearbox (GM investigation in 2021, 2024 bulletin on loose mountings), and a batch of defective valve springs affected engines built in 2020: check the recalls and the history of each car.

Known faults

Defective valve springs (engines built in 2020)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

A batch of defective valve springs affected GM V8s built between 1 June and 15 September 2020, a window later extended to 7 October 2020 for the 6.2 L. Symptoms: rough running, a knocking noise, engine warning light, possible stalling; one case saw a valve fall into a cylinder. GM issued a repair bulletin.

Tremec TR-9080 dual-clutch gearbox: leaks and faults

Severity 2/3 · Costly

At the end of 2021 GM opened an investigation into the 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox of 2020-2022 Corvettes: leaks (seals), error messages asking the driver to shift to P, and a discharged battery in some cases. GM issued several technical bulletins, including a software update. Most reports come from owner forums, so the real frequency is uncertain.

Loose gearbox mountings (2023-2024 Corvettes)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

A GM bulletin (N232427051) concerns certain 2023-2024 Corvettes whose gearbox mountings were incorrectly tightened: dealers inspect and replace the gearbox free of charge, regardless of mileage, until 31 May 2026 (date now passed: check with a dealer for a given vehicle).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Chevrolet Corvette”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask for the serial number and have a Chevrolet dealer check the recalls, bulletins and updates (gearbox, valve springs).
  • 2023-2024 car: check whether the gearbox has been replaced under the mounting bulletin (invoice and repair order).
  • Full test drive: gear changes when cold and warm, jerking, error messages on the dashboard.
  • Check the service history of the dual-clutch gearbox (filters and fluid according to GM bulletins).
  • 2020 engine: listen for knocking or irregular running and ask whether the valve springs have been checked.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the gearbox been repaired or replaced? Do you have the repair orders?
  • Have all GM recalls and bulletins been carried out by a dealer?
  • Where and how was the car imported, and with what specification (European or American)?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
