Verdict

Good choice, check first

GT coupé with a 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V12 producing 740 hp (730 hp), available only with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, successor to the 599 GTB and presented in 2012. Exotic Car Hacks' buying guide rates it among the most reliable V12 grand tourers, but several safety recalls (brakes, airbags) should be checked against the serial number, along with gearbox oil leaks, corrosion around the rear vents and interior trim. A pre-purchase inspection by a Ferrari specialist is essential. The F12tdf (780 hp, 2015–2017) is a separate version.

Known faults

Dual-clutch gearbox: seals and oil leaks

Severity 2/3 · Costly

evo says the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox can suffer an oil seal failure that is hard to spot without inspection, and advises having it checked to avoid unexpected bills. Exotic Car Hacks reports abrupt gear changes, particularly at low speed or on downshifts, and gearbox fluid leaks that may require professional repair. No cost in euros is published in these sources.

Corrosion around the rear grilles

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

evo describes corrosion around the rear wing air vents as a more visible weak point, while noting that most affected cars were treated and repainted under warranty. Exotic Car Hacks also reports corrosion at the rear vent on some F12s. Check visually (paint bubbles) before buying.

Sticky buttons and shrinking dashboard leather

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Supercars.net says F12berlinettas and F12tdfs are prone to “sticky” buttons and interior plastics because of heat, a mainly cosmetic defect whose restoration can be costly. evo and Exotic Car Hacks cite the leather on the top of the dashboard shrinking when the car stays in the sun (Exotic Car Hacks adds the rear sun visor).

Brake fluid reservoir cap recall (loss of braking)

Manufacturer recall

Ferrari told the NHTSA (recall 22V-536, manufacturer number RC 80) that a safety-related defect can affect 2013–2017 F12 Berlinettas and 2017 F12 TDFs: the braking system could leak brake fluid, causing partial or total loss of braking. The NHTSA report lists 23,555 vehicles concerned across all models in the recall. Exotic Car Hacks cites the same recall and cause (reservoir cap that does not let air through). US recall: check against the serial number with the Ferrari network that the work has been done on the car.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Airbag recalls (passenger gas generator, control unit, driver module)

Manufacturer recall

Several NHTSA recalls affect F12s: a passenger airbag gas generator that can burst after long exposure to humidity and temperature changes (18V040 for 2013 F12 Berlinettas, 19V006 for 2014–2017); an airbag control unit that may prevent or distort the deployment of the airbags and pretensioners (19V411, 2015–2017 F12 Berlinetta); a poorly assembled driver airbag module on cars built from 19 December 2014 to 29 April 2015 (15V433). In all cases the replacement is free at the dealer. Exotic Car Hacks lists these recalls. Check against the serial number that each one has been carried out.

Manufacturer recalls

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€369
Insurance€360
Maintenance€94
Depreciation€2,449
Total per month€3,272

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Maintenance: budget of a closely related model.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the serial number checked with the Ferrari network for recalls: brake fluid reservoir cap, airbags (passenger gas generator, control unit, driver module).
  • Have the dual-clutch gearbox checked by a specialist (seals, oil leaks) and make sure the oils have been changed according to the Ferrari schedule.
  • Inspect the rear wings around the grilles: paint bubbles or traces of corrosion.
  • Check the condition of the sticky buttons, the dashboard leather and the rear sun visor.
  • Have a full diagnostic read done and check the wear of the carbon-ceramic brakes and the operation of the magnetorheological dampers (leaks).
  • Require the complete service history: the F12 was sold new with a free 7-year service plan (evo).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the brake and airbag recalls been carried out, and do you have proof from the Ferrari network?
  • Has the dual-clutch gearbox been checked for seal leaks, and when were its oils last changed?
  • Has the bodywork been repaired around the rear grilles (corrosion), and has the servicing always been done at Ferrari?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
