Verdict

Good choice, check first

Supercar with a naturally aspirated 4.5 L V8 producing 570 hp (605 hp for the Speciale), only with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, as the Italia coupé or as a Spider with a retractable hard top. PistonHeads' buying guide rates reliability as very good, but two recalls should be checked with the serial number (glued wheel-arch liners, crankshaft on some 2012 cars), and the exhaust manifolds, clutch wear and interior coverings should be watched. A visit to a Ferrari specialist is essential.

Known faults

Cracked exhaust manifolds

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The original manifolds of early cars can crack (welds of the manifolds, according to a specialist workshop). Symptoms cited: ticking when cold, white residue in the engine bay. Cartest lists them among the major financial risks at purchase, and Deckers Auto mentions engine damage if the fault is ignored. Collecting Cars notes that updated parts have often been fitted under warranty.

Dual-clutch gearbox: sensors and clutch wear

Severity 2/3 · Costly

PistonHeads notes that gearbox failures on early 458s are not unknown, that clutch problems are often solved by a software update or recalibration of the position sensors, and that a new clutch costs close to 20,000 pounds. Collecting Cars cites internal speed sensor failures on early gearboxes, once fixed by replacing the whole gearbox. Cartest advises measuring clutch wear before buying and negotiating beyond 70%. A Canadian workshop puts a clutch replacement at 7,000 to 10,000 dollars (currency not specified).

Sticky buttons and dashboard leather

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The soft-touch coating of the controls, steering column and top of the dashboard can become sticky (PistonHeads, Collecting Cars, Deckers Auto). The leather on the top of the dashboard can ripple or lift after sun exposure (PistonHeads, Collecting Cars). Not a roadworthiness defect, repairable by a specialist.

Fire risk recall (glued wheel-arch liners)

Manufacturer recall

In 2010, Ferrari recalled 1,248 Ferrari 458 Italias after five fires in France, the United States, Switzerland and China. The cause was the glue fixing the rear wheel-arch liners: engine heat deformed the liner and the glue could ignite. The remedy is replacing the glue with mechanical fixings (AutoGuide). To be checked with the serial number.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Defective crankshaft on some 2012 cars (recall)

Manufacturer recall

PistonHeads reports that cars from around 2012, sold in the United States, left the factory with a crankshaft incorrectly fitted, which could cause the engine to seize, and that the recall concerned a few hundred cars. Transport Canada describes a poorly manufactured crankshaft on some 2012 458s, which could break and block the engine; the dealer repairs or replaces the engine. Check with the serial number that the recall has been carried out.

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€337
Insurance€158
Maintenance€74
Depreciation€2,424
Total per month€2,993

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the serial number checked with Ferrari for the two recalls: glued wheel-arch liners (2010) and crankshaft (some 2012 cars).
  • Listen to the engine when cold (ticking) and inspect the exhaust manifolds on both sides, preferably with a borescope by a specialist.
  • Have the clutch wear value read on diagnostics; negotiate the price beyond 70% wear and check that the gearbox oil has been changed.
  • Spider: operate the roof several times; it must open without hesitation or misalignment.
  • Check the condition of the buttons (sticky coating), the dashboard leather and whether the front-axle lift system is fitted.
  • Ask for the full service history from the dealer network and a pre-purchase inspection by a Ferrari specialist.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the recalls (wheel-arch liner glue, crankshaft) been carried out, and do you have proof from the dealer network?
  • What is the clutch wear at the last diagnostic, and has the gearbox been serviced or updated?
  • Have the exhaust manifolds been replaced or checked, and is the service book complete?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
