Known faults

TCT gearbox: jerking and clutch wear

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Au7o describes jerking and hesitation at low speed (manoeuvring, city traffic) with a dry clutch that wears faster; the procedure given is a reset of the adaptation, then replacing the clutch if the fault persists. Drives Today also cites, on the gearbox side, a hydraulic pump pressure stabiliser that can fail and prevent a gear from engaging, and puts the replacement of a gearbox at 2,000 pounds (standard gearbox) or 2,500 pounds (upgraded gearbox). AD Autodistribution recommends checking the history of the TCT gearbox, especially for jerking.

Premature wear of suspension bushes

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Au7o reports early wear of the front and rear bushes (knocking, drift), accelerated by track use. Autocar says that a creak when steering on an early production car probably comes from the main bushes of the lower wishbones, with the remedy being replacement of the whole set, as these parts were improved on later models.

Manufacturer recalls

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€167
Insurance€82

Depreciation€742
Total per month€1,017

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Insurance: brand average, as no average is published for this model.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Try the TCT gearbox at low speed (manoeuvring, dense traffic): any jerk or hesitation should be diagnosed (Au7o, AD).
  • Ask for the gearbox software updates and the maintenance history (Drives Today).
  • Listen for creaks when steering and knocking from the front end: bushes of the lower wishbones (Autocar, Au7o).
  • Look in the invoices for proof of periodic re-tightening of the subframe mounts on the carbon tub (Autocar).
  • Check whether the car has been driven on a track: track use accelerates bush wear (Au7o).
  • Have a pre-purchase inspection carried out by an Alfa Romeo specialist (Drives Today).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the TCT gearbox shown jerking, had an adaptation reset or a clutch replacement?
  • Has the car been driven on a track?
  • Can you provide the service book and invoices, including those for the subframe mounts and the bushes?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
