Verdict
A turbo three-cylinder of 999 cm³ with direct injection and a timing belt, offered from 95 to 116 hp depending on the versions and the Volkswagen Group brands. Feedback is rather good: apart from oil consumption considered normal, the most documented issue concerns the injectors, of which a batch built between 2018 and 2020 was recalled for leaking. On the Golf VIII, the 1.0 TSI 110 hp is the “evo” version of this engine, running on the Miller cycle.

Injectors leaking or failing (1.0 TSI)
Manufacturer recallThe Volkswagen Group recalled VW, Seat and Skoda cars with a 1.0 TSI engine built between 2018 and 2020: an injector with an excessive leak rate lets fuel into the combustion chamber, particularly after a long stop, and the car may no longer meet emissions standards. The injectors are replaced free of charge at an approved workshop (two to three hours). Fiches-auto also notes that the injection pump and injectors of this engine can fail prematurely. Check that the recall has been carried out.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
