Verdict
Compact SUV rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2016, with a 510-litre boot. The sources describe rather sound reliability, with faults that are mostly electronic and a DSG gearbox that needs regular servicing. A safety recall (welding of the brake pedal plate) targeted examples built in 2020 and 2021: check it by serial number.

Known faults
DSG gearbox: jerks and mechatronics
Severity 2/3 · CostlyParkers flags the DSG gearbox as a point to watch: oil changes must be kept up (the gearbox is not sealed for life), and jerky or reluctant gear changes can come from a worn clutch, the mechatronics or worn bearings. Autopartspro, a parts reseller, also reports mechatronics failures and faster dry-clutch wear on the seven-speed gearbox in urban driving. Ask for the gearbox service invoices.

Electronics: infotainment screen, Front Assist, driver assistance
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingAutocar reports that a software bug in the SOS emergency call system can freeze the infotainment screen, with a software update as the lasting remedy. Carbuyer states that nearly half of the reported problems are electrical and mentions screen bugs. An owner of a 2.0 TDI 190 hp (Fiches-auto) cites frequent faults with Front Assist and blind-spot sensors.

1.5 TSI: cold jerks at low speed
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingAutocar describes a hesitant and jerky operation at low speed on the Ateca 1.5 TSI when the engine is cold, often corrected by a software update. Honest John confirms that Volkswagen acknowledged this fault on the 1.5 TSI ("kangarooing" when cold) and published a software update in 2020; according to owners, the update's effectiveness varies.

Recall: welding of the brake pedal plate
Manufacturer recallA recall concerns the welding of the brake pedal plate, which may be defective: the plate can come loose and increase the risk of an accident. The Ateca vehicles concerned were built in 2020 and 2021; publication dates vary between sources (European alert in 2021, French notice dated 2022). Only the serial number shows whether a given car is affected.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €133 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €100 |
| Maintenance | €58 |
| Depreciation | €200 |
| Total per month | €491 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (petrol)€133
1.4 EcoTSI 150 version: combined consumption of 5.4 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
5.4 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €133
Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.
- Insurance€100
Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.
- Maintenance€58
Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.
- Depreciation€200
Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.
Inspection checklist
Seat Ateca I — inspection checklist
Things to check
- Have a Seat dealer check, using the serial number, that the brake pedal plate recall has been dealt with.
- DSG test: pull-aways, low-speed manoeuvres and gear changes; ask for the gearbox oil change invoices.
- 1.5 TSI: test with a cold engine at low speed to detect jerks, and check that the software update has been carried out.
- Test the infotainment screen, Front Assist and the blind-spot sensors.
- Diesel: make sure the car does not only make short trips (particulate filter) and check for leaks.
Questions to ask the seller
- Have the brake pedal recall and the other manufacturer's recalls been carried out? Do you have the proof?
- Has the DSG gearbox been oil-changed or repaired, and when?
- Have electronic faults (screen, Front Assist) been dealt with under warranty?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
