Verdict

A non-turbo three-cylinder of 999 cm³ with indirect injection, introduced in 2014 on the Twingo III and then fitted to the Clio V and the Dacia Sandero, with 61 to 75 hp. Fiches-auto gives it a very favourable verdict based on 144 reviews, and L'argus notes that it attracts little attention compared with the 0.9 and 1.2 TCe. Points to watch: timing chain noise on the first Twingo III, sensors and probes that trigger the engine warning light, and possible oil consumption at high mileage. It has no hydraulic tappets, so valve clearances must be adjusted every 100,000 km. Its very limited torque gives it a slightly anaemic character.

Timing chain noise

Severity 2/3 · Costly

L'argus reports timing chain noises on the 0.9 TCe and 1.0 SCe of the Twingo III, with chain replacement needed up to April 2018. Car Verif advises against a car showing a metallic timing noise, especially if it was built before April 2018, and MyMotorList notes a few chain replacements around 100,000 km.

Engine warning light: sensors and lambda probes

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

L'argus cites, on 2015-2016 1.0 SCe engines, an injection warning light with loss of power caused by the top dead centre sensor, as well as unstable idling or higher fuel consumption caused by the upstream oxygen sensor or requiring reprogramming. Car Verif notes injection faults on the first model years of the Twingo SCe, and an owner of a Twingo SCe 70 says they replace a lambda probe about every 30,000 km.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
