Verdict
MPV on the MQB platform, rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2015, with 834 L of boot space in 5-seat configuration according to Volkswagen documentation. The documented points to watch are the DSG7 gearbox (clutches, mechatronics unit), the emissions systems of the TDI engines, and a recall for airbags and seatbelt pretensioners on cars built in 2016-2017. A service history and an extended gearbox test drive are essential.

Known faults
DSG7 gearbox: clutches and mechatronics unit
Severity 2/3 · CostlyThe DSG7 gearbox is the point most often cited on the Touran: jerking, noises and safety shutdowns, especially on versions with dry clutches. The owner of a 2017 1.6 TDI 115 DSG7 reports a failed clutch at 50,000 km, and another report mentions replacement of the mechatronics unit. CarVerif advises testing the gearbox when warm and refusing a car that jerks.

Sources
TDI emissions: EGR, particulate filter, AdBlue
Severity 2/3 · CostlyCarVerif recommends checking the EGR valve, the particulate filter and the AdBlue system on Touran TDIs. Owners of the 1.6 TDI cite problems with the EGR valve, the EGR cooler and the injectors.

Cold stuttering on the 1.5 TSI EVO
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingVolkswagen acknowledged hesitation when cold on the 1.5 TSI EVO and issued a software update in 2020. According to Honest John, some owners continue to report problems; Au7o describes jerking at low acceleration on 2019-2023 Touran 1.5 TSI EVOs, noting that the updates improve the situation without always eliminating the fault.

Recall: airbag and seatbelt pretensioner
Manufacturer recallTouran cars built between 8 July 2016 and 6 February 2017 have been recalled: a different mixture in the igniter may prevent the driver or passenger airbag or the seatbelt pretensioner from deploying in an accident. What Car? also reports a manufacturing defect in the airbag and pretensioner; the check is carried out by VIN at a dealership.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €135 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €71 |
| Maintenance | €37 |
| Depreciation | €239 |
| Total per month | €482 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (petrol)€135
1.5 TSI EVO 150 DSG7 version: combined consumption of 5.5 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
5.5 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €135
Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.
- Insurance€71
Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.
- Maintenance€37
Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.
- Depreciation€239
Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.
Inspection checklist

Things to check
- DSG7: test drive when cold and then when warm, including low-speed manoeuvres, to detect jerking, noises or a switch to limp mode.
- Ask for the DSG gearbox service invoices and have the fault codes read before buying.
- TDI: check that there is no engine warning light or AdBlue alert, and review the history of the EGR valve and particulate filter.
- 1.5 TSI EVO: start the engine cold and drive for a few minutes to detect any stuttering.
- Car built in 2016-2017: have a dealership check, using the VIN, that the airbag and pretensioner recall has been carried out.
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the DSG gearbox been repaired (clutch, mechatronics unit)? Do you have the invoices?
- Has the vehicle had AdBlue alerts or work on the EGR valve or particulate filter?
- Have the manufacturer recalls, including the airbag and pretensioner recall, been carried out?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
