Buy with care

MPV rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2016, with a 506 L boot (Scénic) and a Grand Scénic version seating up to 7. Car Verif considers it worth buying under conditions: avoid the 1.2 TCe (oil consumption that can lead to engine failure), test the EDC gearbox, and check the AdBlue system of the 1.7 Blue dCi.

Known faults

Oil consumption of the 1.2 TCe

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The 1.2 TCe (H5Ft) of Scénic IV models from 2016 to 2018 is known for consuming oil, due to a sealing fault in the second piston ring: Car Verif, drawing on L'argus, reports a risk of engine failure and classes these versions as "to avoid". Que Choisir reports many cases on this engine; on the Planète Renault forum, members believe even the 1.2 TCe 130 of the Scénic 4 is not immune.

EDC gearbox of the 1.5 dCi 110: jerking and clutch failure

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Owners of Scénic 4 dCi 110 EDC describe violent jerks when restarting after Stop & Start and engine speed oscillations; in one case, one of the gearbox clutches failed and the gearbox had to be replaced, with 2,500 euros left to the customer after Renault's contribution. Fiches-auto also notes noisy and harsh clutch engagement when cold on Renault EDC gearboxes.

AdBlue system of the 1.7 Blue dCi

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Fiches-auto observes that the 1.7 Blue dCi suffers mainly from its AdBlue injection system. Scénic 4 owners report a urea supply module failing at 11,000 km (with the vehicle announced to lock after 1,000 km), or a complete replacement of the AdBlue management under warranty, with the car off the road for nearly three months.

Manufacturer recalls

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Consumption taken from a published range (depends on trim and tyres).
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • 1.2 TCe: demand the maintenance history and the oil level record, and measure oil consumption; without a history, prefer a 1.3 TCe.
  • EDC gearbox: test it cold with Stop & Start activated; a jerk on restart or irregular gear changes should lead you to walk away.
  • 1.7 Blue dCi: check that no AdBlue or engine warning light is displayed and ask for invoices for any work on the AdBlue system.
  • Check the wear of the 20-inch tyres (195/55 R20 as standard), which cost more than 17-inch tyres and sometimes wear quickly at the front.
  • Scénic built between September 2018 and June 2019: check with Renault that the recall campaign for the fuel line (risk of leaks and fire) has been carried out.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have the service book and maintenance invoices, including any oil top-ups?
  • Have the EDC gearbox, the clutch or the AdBlue system already been repaired or replaced?
  • Have all the manufacturer's recalls been carried out?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Renault Scénic IV reliable?

Car Verif gives it a "GO under conditions" (6.5/10): the sore point is the 1.2 TCe and its oil consumption, and the engine and gearbox should be checked. On the 1.3 TCe, Car Verif found no serious engine failures across 14 audited examples, but some loss of power in severe cold.

Which engine should I choose on a used Scénic IV?

For petrol, the 1.3 TCe 140, introduced in 2018 to replace the 1.2 TCe and offered with a manual or 7-speed EDC gearbox. For diesel, the 1.7 Blue dCi 120, introduced in autumn 2018, while keeping an eye on the AdBlue system. Avoid the 1.2 TCe.

What is the boot capacity of the Scénic IV and Grand Scénic IV?

According to L'argus, 506 L (VDA standard, rear seat fully back) for the Scénic and 718 L for the 5-seat Grand Scénic; in the 7-seat version, the Grand Scénic offers 233 L with the third row unfolded.
