Verdict

Good choice, check first

Electric SUV rated 5 Euro NCAP stars in 2021, with a 543 L boot. Its sensitive point is the follow-up of recalls: a European recall covers the high-voltage battery modules of the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.Buzz built up to August 2024, and the screens and software are the most cited complaint. Have the chassis number checked to confirm that the recalls and updates have been carried out before buying.

Known faults

Screens and software: freezing, restarts, bugs

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The central touchscreen can slow down, freeze or restart, which hampers navigation and the air conditioning controls, and several updates have not fixed everything according to Ovoko. In the United States and Canada, a recall concerns 2021-2023 ID.4s whose instrument cluster and screens can reset or shut down, including the reversing camera image. I have not found an equivalent recall for France.

Faulty high-voltage battery modules (European recall)

Manufacturer recall

Volkswagen is recalling nearly 100,000 electric vehicles in Europe (ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz and Cupra Born) for non-compliant high-voltage battery modules. A faulty module can cause a voltage divergence between cells, with a warning light on the dashboard and a drop in range; the fire risk is presented as exceptional. The production dates cited vary between sources (up to August 2024). The repair consists of a software update and a workshop inspection, with replacement of the faulty modules if necessary.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

12 V battery no longer charging (on-board charger)

Manufacturer recall

A US recall of 13,769 vehicles, 2024 model-year ID.4s and Audi Q4 e-tron, targets condensation in the on-board charger: it damages a circuit board, the DC/DC converter fails and the 12 V battery no longer charges, with alerts followed by a reduction in driving functions. The repair is replacement of the charger. These sources are North American and do not specify the application in France.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have a Volkswagen dealer check, using the chassis number, that the high-voltage battery recall (modules) has been dealt with or does not apply to the car.
  • Check that the software is up to date: the central screen, instrument cluster and reversing camera should start without freezing or restarting during the test drive.
  • Ask for a high-voltage battery diagnosis and check that no battery warning light is on.
  • Check the condition of the 12 V battery and whether any charging alerts appear at start-up.
  • Test charging on AC and DC, with the supplied cable, to make sure it starts normally.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the recalls and software update campaigns (high-voltage battery in particular) been carried out? Do you have the proof?
  • Has the software already caused problems (frozen screen, restarts) and has it been updated at a workshop?
  • Has the high-voltage battery been inspected or have any modules been replaced?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
