Verdict

A naturally aspirated 2.0 four-cylinder from the Dynamic Force family (152 hp on its own), combined with an electric motor for 184 hp combined on the Corolla, the facelifted C-HR and the Lexus UX 250h, and 196 hp on the 2023 facelifted Corolla. Its reliability reputation is good and no serious fault recognised by Toyota is documented. Owners report jerking caused by faulty injectors, replaced under warranty, and the 12 V battery can discharge if the car stays still.

Known faults

Jerking and misfires caused by injectors

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Owners, mainly in the United Kingdom, describe shaking or misfires around 1,500 to 2,000 rpm under load, often without a warning light, most often on cylinder no. 3 and on 2020 cars. The dealership replaces one or more injectors under warranty, sometimes with a repeat a few tens of thousands of kilometres later. The cause is not established (fuel quality has been suggested) and no official recall has been found. The same symptom has been reported on a 2020 Lexus UX 250h.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
