Verdict

Buy with care

Light, simple small car, offered in France with petrol engines only, with mild hybrid technology on part of the range. It only earned 3 Euro NCAP stars in 2017 (4 with the optional emergency braking). Swifts built between 2017 and 2019 were subject to an airbag recall: check that it has been carried out.

Known faults

Airbag recall: unintended deployment

Manufacturer recall

Faulty airbag controller software can deploy the side airbags, curtain airbags and pretensioners when a rear door is slammed, with a risk of injury. It affects Swifts built between February 2017 and February 2019 according to the British recall; the fix is a software update at a Suzuki dealer, to be checked using the VIN.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Suzuki Swift”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€113
Insurance€66
Maintenance€21
Depreciation€149
Total per month€349

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: servicing prices only, without tyres or brakes: probably underestimated.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€113

1.2 Dualjet 90 version: combined consumption of 4.6 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

4.6 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €113

Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€66

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Maintenance€21

Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.

Depreciation€149

Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have a Suzuki dealer check, using the VIN, that the airbag software recall (2017-2019) has been carried out.
  • Ask for the invoice or certificate for the airbag software update.
  • Check whether the car has the optional emergency braking: it is what raises the Euro NCAP rating from 3 to 4 stars.
  • Check the service book and the invoices.
  • Road test: operation of the gearbox and of the mild hybrid system where fitted, and no warning lights on the dashboard.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the airbag software recall been carried out at Suzuki? Do you have proof?
  • Does the car have automatic emergency braking?
  • What is the exact engine (Dualjet, Boosterjet, hybrid) and the service history?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
