Verdict

Good choice, check first

Raised estate with all-wheel drive, rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP (test of 2014). The documented faults are rather nuisances (battery draining, jerking from the Lineartronic gearbox, windscreens cracking with EyeSight); the diesel needs to be driven on the open road so that its particulate filter does not clog.

Known faults

Clogged particulate filter and oil dilution (diesel)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The diesel's particulate filter is very sensitive to short journeys; incomplete regeneration can dilute the oil. The Car Checker report also mentions clogging of the EGR valve.

Cracked windscreen (EyeSight camera)

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Owners and a US class action report windscreens that crack; replacement costs more because the EyeSight camera has to be recalibrated. Subaru denies any defect.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the fault codes read and ask whether the software updates (Lineartronic gearbox, control unit) were carried out by Subaru.
  • Test drive at low speed under light load: look for jerking, hesitation or vibration from the Lineartronic.
  • Test the battery and check that there has been no abnormal drain while the car was parked.
  • Inspect the windscreen (cracks) and check that the EyeSight camera works properly.
  • Diesel: check the oil level and condition (dilution), the DPF regeneration history and how the car is used (short trips or open road).

Questions to ask the seller

  • How has the car been used (short city trips, or motorway and open-road driving)?
  • Has the windscreen or battery been replaced? Has the EyeSight camera been recalibrated?
  • Do you have the service invoices (oil changes, gearbox) and proof that the software updates were done?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
