Verdict
Successor to the XV in Europe, the Crosstrek is only available as a 2.0 e-Boxer with 136 hp and all-wheel drive, and earned 5 stars at Euro NCAP in 2024. It is a very recent model: the track record on its reliability in Europe is thin, and two documented recalls in the United States (dashboard wiring harness, front driveshaft) mean you should check with the Subaru network that the car is not affected.

Known faults
Recall (United States): dashboard wiring harness may short-circuit
Manufacturer recallSubaru recalled 2024 Crosstrek and Impreza models in the United States (Crosstrek built between 20 February and 6 June 2023) because the dashboard wiring harness, too close to the steering crossmember bracket, can wear and cause a short circuit, with a risk of loss of traction while driving. Remedy: addition of a clamp and, if necessary, protection or replacement of the harness. This recall concerns American cars: its application to cars sold in Europe is not confirmed, so check the serial number with Subaru.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall (United States): crack in the front driveshaft outer cage
Manufacturer recallA US recall (23V754) affects certain 2024 Crosstrek and Impreza models (as well as 2023-2024 Forester and 2023 WRX): the outer cage of the front driveshaft can crack because of a faulty cooling process during manufacture, with a risk of loss of traction or of the vehicle moving when stopped without the parking brake. Remedy: inspection and replacement of the driveshafts. Its application to cars sold in Europe is not confirmed, so check the serial number with Subaru.

Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Have Subaru check the serial number to find out whether the car is affected by a recall (dashboard wiring harness, front driveshafts).
- Have the condition of the wiring harness under the dashboard and of the front driveshafts checked when buying.
- Carry out an extended test drive of the Lineartronic gearbox (CVT): check for vibrations or noises when accelerating.
- Test the 11.6-inch multimedia screen and the EyeSight driver assistance systems.
- Check the service book and invoices at a Subaru repairer.
Questions to ask the seller
- Have the Subaru recalls been carried out? Do you have the paperwork?
- Has the car been serviced within the Subaru network, with invoices to back it up?
- Has there been an electrical problem, an error message or a loss of traction since the purchase?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
