Verdict

Buy with care

Lengthened version of the Tivoli with a 720-litre boot, but Euro NCAP gives it only 3 stars (4 with the safety pack). The 1.6 diesels have been subject to recalls for fuel leaks: check with a dealer that they have been carried out. Little long-term reliability data exists.

Known faults

Fuel leak (diesel supply line)

Manufacturer recall

Documented recalls on the 1.6 diesel: micro-cracks can appear on the fuel supply line, with a risk of leaks and then fire (XLV, Tivoli and D16DTF Korando built between July 2015 and June 2020 according to Car-Recalls.eu; Australian recall of 2020 for the 2015-2020 Tivoli and Tivoli XLV). A separate 2019 recall concerns 2015-2018 XLV cars: the wiring may interfere with the line and damage it. Repair is free at a dealership; check by VIN.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “SsangYong XLV”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Real monthly cost

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€127
Insurance€80
Maintenance€27
Depreciation€115
Total per month€349

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Insurance: average for a closely related model (other generation or same platform).
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Maintenance: budget of a closely related model.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€127

1.6 e-XDi 115 manuelle version: combined consumption of 4.7 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

4.7 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €127

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the serial number checked at a SsangYong dealer: have the fuel line recalls (2019 and 2020-2021) been carried out?
  • Diesel: visually inspect the fuel line area and look for any smell or trace of diesel.
  • Check whether the car has the safety pack (autonomous emergency braking), rated 4 stars at Euro NCAP versus 3 without.
  • Test the gearbox (manual or Aisin automatic) cold and warm.
  • Check the service book and the remaining warranty period with the network.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the fuel leak recalls been carried out? Do you have proof?
  • Is the car fitted with the safety pack with autonomous emergency braking?
  • Has the servicing been followed within the SsangYong network?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
